Red Dead Redemption 2 Tips and Tricks: Beginner Guide to Story Mode

Start Red Dead Redemption 2 Story Mode with practical advice on cores, horse care, weapon condition, camp satchels, perfect pelts, and bounties.

Start by learning Arthur’s upkeep, your horse, and the camp before spending heavily on equipment. These tips cover the base-game Story Mode on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, not Red Dead Online. They do not require Special or Ultimate Edition bonuses.

Content warning: Mature themes include violence, blood and gore, nudity, sexual content, strong language, and drugs and alcohol. This guide is non-graphic and avoids major story spoilers.

Quick answer: Refill cores with suitable provisions and rest, carry a Horse Reviver, and maintain your guns with gun oil. When the camp ledger becomes available, consider Leather Working Tools for Pearson’s satchel crafting. For perfect pelts, start with a three-star animal and use its recommended weapon and ammunition. Pay outstanding bounties at a post office.

Cores, Food, and Weather

The symbols for Health, Stamina, and Dead Eye are cores; the surrounding meters are separate reserves. Do not assume that a full outer meter means Arthur is well rested and fed.

Health and Stamina cores affect how quickly their meters recover. Cores also drain over time, so check them between activities, not only after taking damage. Dead Eye is different: its meter does not simply regenerate because its core is full.

NeedWhat to check
Refill a coreRead the effects of provisions in your satchel, or rest
Restore an outer meterChoose a tonic that restores that attribute
Prepare for cold countryStore a suitable outfit on your horse
Recover after a long rideCheck the horse’s cores as well as Arthur’s

Different consumables restore different attributes. Read the item description instead of assuming every food or tonic does the same job. Resting at a bed is another way to replenish cores.

Clothing matters when the weather changes. An unsuitable outfit increases core drain, so bring cold-weather clothing before a mountain trip. Deal with the cause of the drain instead of repeatedly consuming supplies while wearing the same unsuitable clothes.

Horse Care

Your horse is worth looking after before you start hunting for a replacement. Feeding and brushing build your bond, while higher bonding extends whistle range and unlocks additional maneuvers.

A practical routine is to check the horse’s condition when you check your own supplies. Keep it nearby when exploring on foot; a whistle will not call a horse from anywhere on the map.

Carry a Horse Reviver before a long journey. It can save a critically injured horse, but it is not a way to resurrect one that has already died. Keep several manual saves as well, especially before risky outings. An autosave may already include a loss you hoped to undo.

Slow down around obstacles and keep the horse out of an active fight when possible. Its value is not just its speed: it also carries your equipment. Before heading away on foot, make checking your loadout part of the same preparation routine.

Weapons and Dead Eye

Watch the weapon’s Condition meter. Repeated firing and exposure to water or mud degrade guns and reduce their performance.

You have two maintenance options:

  • Carry gun oil and use the weapon maintenance prompts to clean a gun yourself.
  • Have a gunsmith clean it during a town visit.

Clean the guns you plan to use before a hunt or difficult mission. A bigger purchase is not the first answer to a weapon that has become less effective through neglect.

Dead Eye slows aiming and is useful when a precise shot matters. Keep supplies for its meter, and do not rely on health or stamina recovery to refill it. Story progression adds capabilities to Dead Eye, so an early-game character will not have every targeting aid immediately.

For hunting, use the extra aiming time to place a careful shot with the correct equipment. Dead Eye is not a substitute for choosing a suitable weapon or checking the animal’s quality first.

Camp and Satchels

Check the camp ledger when it becomes available. It offers upgrades to supplies and facilities, including Leather Working Tools for Pearson. If inventory space is repeatedly interrupting your trips, satchels are a useful project to prioritize.

Before you hunt for a satchel:

  1. Open Pearson’s crafting list and choose the upgrade you want.
  2. Check both its material list and its camp requirements.
  3. Gather the required perfect-quality materials.
  4. Bring those materials to Pearson instead of selling them elsewhere.

A pelt sold to a butcher or trapper is not available for Pearson’s recipe. Treat each crafting destination as a separate decision.

The final Legend of the East Satchel requires the other satchels first and raises most item capacities to 99. That makes it a longer-term goal, not a prerequisite for enjoying Chapter 2. Work on one recipe at a time instead of collecting every animal material without a plan.

Hunting for Perfect Pelts

A clean shot alone does not guarantee a perfect pelt. Check the animal before committing:

CheckWhy it matters
Starting qualityLook for a three-star animal when gathering perfect materials
Species informationMatch the weapon and ammunition to that animal
Shot placementAim for a clean kill without unnecessary extra damage
Crafting destinationKeep Pearson’s required materials out of your selling pile

Binoculars let you inspect animals from a distance. Read the animal information and use the recommended equipment; a broad rule such as “use a rifle on everything large” is less useful than the species-specific entry.

If the animal escapes a clean attempt, do not assume repeated shots will preserve its quality. For a crafting trip, selecting another suitable animal can be more useful than spending ammunition on a damaged pelt.

Use Dead Eye for precision, but do not expect its later weak-point highlighting at the beginning of the story. Check your supplies before leaving camp so the hunt does not end with an empty meter or a dirty gun.

Money, Bounties, and Travel

Make regular manual saves, and keep money for upkeep rather than spending every payout immediately. Loot can provide supplies and valuables, but lingering at a crime scene risks attracting witnesses.

A bounty is tied to the state where it was incurred. Escaping an immediate pursuit does not mean that bounty has been paid. Visit a post office to settle it before continuing a quiet hunting or exploration trip.

Do not treat a mask as a guarantee that crime is consequence-free. Avoid unnecessary confrontations in town, particularly when you are carrying valuable materials.

For long trips, trains offer a paid travel option. Cinematic riding can follow a marked route, but it is not a safe reason to leave the game unattended: an encounter can interrupt the journey. Stay ready to take control.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Confusing cores with meters - Match the consumable to the part you need to restore.
  2. Leaving without horse supplies - Carry a reviver before taking risks.
  3. Ignoring weapon condition - Maintain your guns before judging their performance.
  4. Selling crafting pelts - Deliver Pearson’s materials to camp.
  5. Ignoring an animal’s starting quality - Check its stars before a perfect-pelt hunt.
  6. Continuing a trip with an unpaid bounty - Escape and payment solve different problems.
  7. Relying on one autosave - Keep manual saves you can return to.
