Replaced Beginner Guide - Combat, Platforming, and Upgrades

Beginner Replaced tips for deliberate combat, dodge and parry reads, gun charge, platforming puzzles, side missions, and upgrade choices.

On this page

Replaced is a cinematic 2.5D action platformer where style can trick you into rushing. The fights look fast and brutal, but the safest way to play is deliberate: read enemy cues, keep space, spend your gun charge well, and treat movement as part of every encounter.

Content warning: this Mature-rated guide discusses violent combat, strong language, alcohol and tobacco references, and dystopian cyberpunk themes in a non-graphic way.

This beginner guide focuses on the habits that matter in the opening hours. It keeps story detail light, because Replaced works best when you discover Phoenix City, The Station, and R.E.A.C.H.’s situation for yourself.

Essential Tips

1. Slow Down Before Every Fight

Replaced rewards rhythm more than raw speed. Your basic mistake will be trying to attack through pressure because the animations look like a stylish brawler. Instead, enter each fight by watching the first enemy cue, repositioning, and then committing to a short punish.

Think of each encounter as a space-control problem. If enemies surround you, reset the spacing before chasing damage. A clean dodge that puts you outside a crowd is worth more than one extra hit that leaves you boxed in.

2. Learn the Color Cues Early

Enemy attacks use clear visual cues. Treat red as the signal to dodge and yellow as the signal to counter or parry. Do not wait until a boss or crowded room to learn that language. Spend early fights practicing the timing even when you could probably mash through.

When a cue appears, answer it first and attack second. Replaced is built around reading pressure, and missing one cue can make the next two seconds messy enough that you lose control of the whole room.

3. Use the Baton to Build Your Shot

Your weapon flow is not just melee plus a free gun. Baton strikes build the charge that lets you fire powerful shots. That means the shot is a resource, not a panic button. Build it with safe melee strings, then spend it on a target that actually changes the fight.

Fast or ranged enemies are good candidates when they are creating the most pressure. Brutes and shielded enemies can demand more setup, so do not waste your best answer just because it is available.

4. Respect Ranged Enemies First

Gunners are dangerous because they split your attention. A melee enemy in front of you is easier to read when a shot is not coming from the edge of the screen. In mixed groups, locate ranged threats quickly and either close the gap, reposition away from their line, or prepare to reflect when the timing is clean.

Do not let a distant enemy dictate the fight while you trade hits with the nearest target. The safest target is often the enemy shaping the room, not the enemy closest to your face.

5. Save Special Tools for Crowds and Shields

As you unlock more combat tools, use each one for a job. Overdrive helps when you need multiple shots before recharging. Deflect answers bullets when your timing and distance are right. Shockwave is useful when a group collapses on you or when armor and shields need to be broken open.

The pickaxe is also more than a traversal item. It can help cut through shields or armor, but it is slower than your normal attacks. Use it when the enemy’s defense is the problem, then return to safer rhythm.

6. Enter With Movement, Not Walking

Walking straight into melee range gives enemies too much time to start their own attack. Use movement to shape the entry. Sprinting, stopping, and attacking can create a forward strike that closes distance more safely than a slow approach.

This matters most at the start of a fight or after a reset. If you back out to breathe, do not wander back in. Re-enter with intent, land a short punish, then move again before the group tightens.

7. Treat Platforming Rooms Like Puzzles

Replaced has more platforming than its combat-heavy presentation may suggest. Many traversal spaces ask you to move boxes, handle batteries, power generators, use air vents, or attach to surfaces with the pickaxe. If a jump looks impossible, look for the object or environmental switch that changes the route.

Precision still matters. Stop at ledges, line up before committing, and avoid rushing repeated jumps after a miss. Some sections can send you back through earlier platforming or combat, so patient movement saves time.

8. Do Side Missions Before Moving On

The Station is not just a place to talk. Side missions can provide meaningful upgrades, including improvements tied to health and energy charging. Because those upgrades make combat mistakes less punishing, skipping optional errands can make later fights feel harsher than they need to be.

When you return to the hub, speak with citizens before charging into the next main objective. Even simple tasks are often worth doing if they make your core survival tools stronger.

9. Upgrade Survival Before Style

Early on, prioritize upgrades that keep you alive or let you use key tools more often. Health, stim capacity, energy charging, and gun or ability recharge are easier to benefit from than stylish play you cannot yet execute consistently.

Once you are comfortable reading red and yellow cues, spending shots wisely, and resetting space, you can lean harder into speed. Until then, survivability gives you more attempts to learn each room.

10. Watch the Checkpoint Rhythm

Replaced relies on autosaves, and some retries can send you back before a fight or platforming sequence. When you clear a tough area, play carefully until you are confident the game has moved you past that checkpoint boundary.

This does not mean crawling through every screen. It means avoiding sloppy damage right after a hard room, because repeating a multi-wave fight or a precise traversal section is the fastest way to lose focus.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not mash attacks through enemy cues - red and yellow signals are there to interrupt your offense.

  2. Do not spend gun shots on low-pressure targets - save charge for enemies that are controlling the room.

  3. Do not ignore ranged enemies - one distant shooter can turn a clean melee exchange into chaos.

  4. Do not stand inside a crowd after a combo - dodge out, reset spacing, and re-enter deliberately.

  5. Do not treat Shockwave as decoration - use it when groups, shields, or armor are blocking your rhythm.

  6. Do not force pickaxe attacks constantly - use the pickaxe when defense or traversal calls for it.

  7. Do not rush platforming after a failed jump - stop, recheck the route, and look for vents, batteries, crates, or climb points.

  8. Do not skip hub side missions automatically - they can feed upgrades that make the main path smoother.

  9. Do not chase style before survival - health, energy, and recharge upgrades help you learn safely.

  10. Do not relax after a hard section too soon - autosave placement can make careless follow-up mistakes expensive.
