Resistance 3 Beginner Tips - Campaign Weapons, Health, and Survival

Resistance 3 beginner campaign tips for health pickups, weapon wheel choices, alternate fire, ammo boxes, grenades, and PS3 guide scope.

On this page

Resistance 3 is a PlayStation 3 first-person shooter developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. This guide covers spoiler-light campaign fundamentals for Joseph Capelli’s Resistance 3 campaign, not Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, Resistance: Retribution, or Resistance: Burning Skies.

Content warning: ESRB rates Resistance 3 M for Mature 17+ with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, and Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB. This guide keeps descriptions non-graphic and focused on play.

This is not a chapter walkthrough, boss guide, weapon-upgrade route, collectible-location guide, ending explanation, or multiplayer guide. Launch-era online features are historical context, and Resistance 3 is listed among previously decommissioned PS3 online-server titles.

Essential Tips

1. Treat Health as a Resource You Must Go Get

Do not wait for automatic recovery that may never come.

Resistance 3 brings back a more old-school health rhythm. When you take too much damage, your job is to create space, reach a Sym-Bac or health pickup, and survive the route there. Start noticing health containers before you are desperate so your escape path is already in your head.

2. Break Line of Sight Before You Hunt Pickups

A health pack is not useful if you grab it while still being hit.

When the screen pressure builds, move to cover, around a corner, or behind a safer angle before crossing to health. The goal is not just to touch the pickup; it is to stop the incoming damage long enough for the pickup to matter.

3. Use the Weapon Wheel as a Planning Tool

Carrying a full arsenal means you should solve fights, not just empty the weapon in your hands.

Resistance 3’s weapon wheel lets Capelli carry the arsenal and choose tools by encounter. Pause mentally when a fight changes: close rushers, shielded enemies, drones, long sightlines, and clustered groups all ask for different weapons.

4. Test Alternate Fire Early

Many weapons are defined by their secondary mode.

If a weapon feels ordinary, try its alternate fire in a low-risk fight. The Carbine, Marksman, Auger, Rossmore, Magnum, EMP grenades, and other tools gain much of their value from solving specific problems instead of only dealing straight bullet damage.

5. Rotate Useful Weapons Without Forcing Bad Ones

Weapons improve through use, but survival still comes first.

Use a variety of weapons across the campaign so your arsenal keeps growing with you. That does not mean forcing a poor match in the middle of a hard encounter. If the room needs range, use range. If enemies close fast, switch to a close weapon and live.

6. Keep a Reliable Mid-Range Option Ready

A flexible rifle keeps you stable while you read the room.

Before committing rockets, sniper shots, or trap grenades, keep a dependable mid-range weapon available. It gives you a way to thin standard enemies, protect your health route, and buy time to choose a specialized tool.

7. Save EMPs for the Problems They Are Built For

A shield or drone is a better EMP target than a random weak enemy.

EMP grenades are specifically useful against Chimeran energy shields and drones. Hold them until that kind of problem appears, then use the opening to finish the target or reposition.

8. Use Close Weapons Only When You Control the Distance

Shotguns and rapid-fire tools are strong, but distance decides their value.

The Rossmore and Bullseye can clean up close pressure, but they should not drag you into reckless pushes. Let enemies come through a doorway, round a corner with cover nearby, or switch only after you have closed the distance safely.

9. Use Long-Range Weapons Before the Crowd Collapses

The Deadeye and Marksman are strongest while you still have space.

When a room opens with distant threats, take the accurate shots early. Once enemies are on top of you, swap instead of stubbornly trying to snipe at close range.

10. Refill Before Moving On

Ammo boxes and post-fight scavenging decide the next encounter.

After a fight, check the area for ammo and health before triggering the next push. Resistance 3 gives you a broad arsenal, but that only helps if your key weapons are stocked when the next wave starts.

11. Do Not Play It Like Resistance 2

Resistance 3 rewards Fall of Man-style weapon and health awareness.

If you are coming from Resistance 2, adjust immediately. The weapon wheel and non-regenerating health make positioning, pickup awareness, and weapon selection more important than leaning on a narrow loadout.

12. Keep Story Curiosity Separate From Route Planning

A first run is better when you avoid exact chapter and collectible spoilers.

There are journals, notes, recordings, and chapter-specific encounters, but this guide avoids exact routes and locations. Learn the core combat rhythm first, then save collectible cleanup for a dedicated route.

Health, Ammo, and Scope Notes

Resistance 3 is best approached as a campaign survival shooter rather than a modern regenerating-health sprint. Before entering a new space, ask three questions: where is my next cover, where did I last see health, and which weapon solves the first enemy type I can see?

This guide also treats online features as historical context. For normal guide use, focus on campaign and local/offline play and handle hardware, disc/PSN status, DLC access, and online details separately.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not stand still while waiting to heal - Move toward cover or a known pickup instead of expecting automatic recovery.

  2. Do not run straight to health through active fire - Break line of sight first so the pickup is not wasted.

  3. Do not ignore the weapon wheel - A full arsenal only helps if you switch when the encounter changes.

  4. Do not judge weapons by primary fire alone - Alternate fire often provides the real answer to a hard setup.

  5. Do not spend EMP grenades on basic targets - Save them for shields, drones, and other energy problems.

  6. Do not snipe after enemies reach you - Swap to a close or mid-range weapon when space collapses.

  7. Do not rush into shotgun range without cover - Close weapons work best when you control the approach.

  8. Do not leave an area without refilling - The next fight may assume you used the ammo box or pickups nearby.

  9. Do not force one favorite weapon all campaign - Rotate practical tools so the arsenal stays useful without risking survival.
