Risk of Rain Beginner Tips - Teleporters, Items, and Time

Risk of Rain beginner tips for the original 2013 game: teleporter pace, time scaling, items, drones, difficulty, co-op, and first clears.

On this page

This guide covers the original 2013 Risk of Rain, the 2D action-platformer roguelike by Hopoo Games. It is not a Risk of Rain Returns guide and not a Risk of Rain 2 guide. The original game is about surviving a run, finding each teleporter, managing the clock, collecting randomized items, and leaving before the planet’s scaling danger overtakes your build.

Content note: ESRB rates Risk of Rain E10+ with Alcohol Reference, Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood, Mild Language, and Users Interact. This guide stays non-graphic and gameplay-focused.

This is a beginner fundamentals guide. It is not a full walkthrough, survivor unlock guide, artifact checklist, boss guide, item tier list, monster-log route, achievement guide, or platform-specific co-op setup guide.

Difficulty note: Beginner advice helps, but Risk of Rain is still built around permanent death and rising time pressure. A slow stage can feel safe for a few minutes and still make the next stage much harder.

Essential Tips

1. Confirm You Are Playing the Original Game

Risk of Rain Returns and Risk of Rain 2 do not share every rule.

The original Risk of Rain is the 2013 side-scrolling game. Returns is a remake, and Risk of Rain 2 is the 3D sequel. Broad ideas like items, survivors, danger scaling, and teleporters carry across the series, but exact unlocks, items, movement, boss behavior, and co-op details should not be copied between games.

2. Pick Difficulty for Learning, Not Ego

Rainstorm is the better baseline once you know the controls.

Use an easier setting only to learn movement, attacking, and teleporter flow. When you are ready to build real habits, practice on the standard-style pace before moving up to Monsoon. The lesson to learn is not just surviving one screen; it is surviving while the timer keeps raising the pressure.

3. Look for the Teleporter First

The teleporter is the stage objective.

Do not spend the opening minutes fighting every enemy that appears. Move through the stage, note chest and shrine locations, and find the teleporter early enough that you still have time to turn gold into power.

You do not need to buy everything the moment you see it.

When you pass a chest, shop, shrine, or drone, remember roughly where it is. If you activate the teleporter and earn enough gold during the fight, you can return for useful pickups afterward instead of wandering blind.

5. Activate Before the Stage Feels Perfect

Waiting for one more item can quietly cost the run.

There is a real tradeoff between getting stronger now and making every later fight harder. If you have found the teleporter, have a route to move, and are not completely underbuilt, starting the event is often better than grinding until the timer punishes you.

6. Fight the Teleporter Event From a Route, Not a Corner

The countdown gets worse if you trap yourself.

Before activating, look at nearby platforms, ropes, gaps, and escape paths. You want room to kite enemies, dodge bosses, and circle back through safe space. A bad activation spot can turn an average fight into a wall.

7. Clean Up, Spend, Then Leave

Post-event looting is useful only while it stays efficient.

After the teleporter countdown and remaining enemies are handled, buy nearby items or support that you can afford. Then leave. Long backtracking for a single uncertain pickup gives the timer more time to work against you.

8. Let Random Items Shape the Run

Risk of Rain is not a fixed build order game.

Items are random, and many passives can stack. Instead of forcing the same plan every run, look at what the game has actually given you. If your pickups improve survival, play more patiently. If they boost damage or crowd control, use that strength to finish events faster.

9. Value Survival Alongside Damage

A dead damage build is still a dead run.

Damage helps end fights, but health, armor, healing, mobility, and defensive effects buy the time needed to use that damage. If every fight ends with panic running, prioritize staying alive over chasing only bigger numbers.

10. Buy Drones and Support With a Purpose

Support purchases should solve the next problem.

Drones can help, but gold is also your path to items. Buy support when it helps you survive the next teleporter event or covers a weakness in the current run. Do not drain every coin just because something is available.

11. Learn One Survivor Rhythm Before Swapping Constantly

Each survivor changes your spacing and cooldown habits.

Stay with one survivor long enough to understand attack range, defensive timing, and safe movement during a teleporter event. Switching constantly can hide whether you lost because of the survivor or because your routing was slow.

12. Keep Co-op Moving Toward the Same Goal

A scattered team can waste the stage timer.

In co-op, call out the teleporter, nearby items, and dangerous fights. Splitting briefly to scout can help, but everyone should understand when the team is searching, looting, activating, or leaving.

Run Rhythm

PhaseWhat to DoBeginner Priority
SpawnStart moving, test your survivor rhythm, and collect obvious nearby resources.Do not idle at the start.
SearchSweep for the teleporter while noting loot locations.Find the objective before over-farming.
PrepareBuy nearby items or support if they make the event safer.Improve the run without draining the clock.
ActivateStart the teleporter from a space with movement routes.Avoid corner activations.
SurviveKite, clear pressure, and stay alive through the countdown and boss pressure.Survival first, greed second.
CleanupKill remaining enemies, buy efficient nearby loot, and exit.Leave before backtracking ruins the pace.

Difficulty and Item Habits

Rainstorm is the cleanest long-term learning target because it teaches the intended pressure curve without asking you to solve Monsoon immediately. Use easier practice only to understand inputs, survivor rhythm, and stage flow.

Time is a resource. Every minute spent farming can make future enemies stronger or more numerous. That does not mean you should ignore all loot; it means every detour needs a reason.

Items are run-shaping tools, not a shopping list. Take what you get, learn what it improves, and adjust. A run with defensive pickups should be played differently from a run that mostly gives damage or crowd-control effects.

Unlocks are long-term progress. Characters, items, logs, and artifacts are better treated as goals after your basic teleporter flow is stable. Chasing a difficult unlock during a shaky run can cost both the unlock attempt and the run.

Co-op needs a shared pace. If one player wants to farm and another wants to trigger the teleporter, the timer punishes everyone. Agree on the stage plan before the event starts.

Hidden Mechanics

MechanicWhy It Matters
No mid-run safety netA run’s gold, items, and experience are temporary, so survival decisions matter immediately.
Time scalingThe longer you stay, the more enemy pressure rises. Efficient routing is power.
Teleporter countdownActivating the teleporter starts a fight phase rather than instantly ending the stage.
Post-countdown cleanupYou still need to handle remaining enemies before moving on.
Gold after stageLeftover gold is not carried forward as spending money, so buy useful nearby loot before leaving.
Randomized itemsYou cannot rely on one exact build appearing every run.
Persistent unlocksAchievements and unlocks can improve future runs even after a failed attempt.
Port differencesMultiplayer limits, controls, and online behavior can vary by platform.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not full-clear before finding the teleporter - Scout the objective first so every loot detour has context.

  2. Do not farm endless enemy spawns for comfort - The timer is making later fights harder while you stall.

  3. Do not activate the teleporter from a dead end - Start from an area where you can move, kite, and recover.

  4. Do not leave affordable nearby loot after the event without checking it - Spend efficiently before the stage transition.

  5. Do not backtrack across the entire map for one uncertain pickup - A long detour can cost more than the item helps.

  6. Do not stand still because enemies are lined up - Keep moving unless your survivor or current item setup makes stopping safe.

  7. Do not buy every drone before buying any items - Support is useful, but items are the core of your run power.

  8. Do not chase difficult unlocks before you can finish ordinary teleporter cycles - Stabilize the run loop first.

  9. Do not split the co-op team so far that no one can finish the event cleanly - Scouting is useful only if the team regroups.

  10. Do not force yesterday’s item plan onto today’s run - Build around the pickups you actually found.
