South of Midnight Beginner Tips - Combat, Floofs, and Exploration

Beginner South of Midnight tips for Floofs, Health Filaments, Guiding Strand exploration, dodging, spells, Unravel healing, and chapter replay.

On this page

South of Midnight is a third-person action-adventure from developer Compulsion Games, published by Xbox Game Studios. This guide covers the playable base game, including copies sold inside the Weaver’s Edition bundle, and is not a guide to the soundtrack, artbook, comic, documentary, or other digital extras.

Content warning: South of Midnight includes mature folklore, fantasy violence, blood, strong language, grief, and family trauma. This guide keeps those themes non-graphic and focuses on play.

This is a beginner guide for exploring chapters, spending Floofs, surviving Haint fights, using Hazel’s Weaver spells, and knowing when to replay chapters. It avoids exact collectible routes, boss no-damage routes, trophy routing, and late-story spoilers.

Essential Tips

1. Follow the Guiding Strand, Then Look Away From It

The Guiding Strand is useful when you want the next main objective, but South of Midnight rewards players who pause before running straight ahead. Side paths, hidden ledges, platforming detours, spell interactions, and optional combat spaces can hold the items that make the next fight easier.

Use the strand as a compass, not a leash. When a path opens into a broader area, sweep the edges first, look for readable markers, check high ground, and inspect spots that seem slightly inconvenient to reach. The game is story-driven and fairly direct, but its upgrade economy expects curiosity.

2. Treat Floofs as Your Momentum Currency

Floofs feed Hazel’s upgrade tree, so they are not just completionist clutter. A player who explores consistently can unlock useful perks earlier, while a player who only follows the main path may reach tougher encounters with fewer options.

Prioritize upgrades that solve problems you are already feeling. If projectiles are pinning you down, movement and dodge tools matter. If close-range pressure is making combat messy, perks tied to Unraveling, crowd control, or spell follow-ups can make fights more forgiving. Do not wait until the game feels rough before opening the upgrade menu.

3. Hunt Health Filaments Before You Blame Combat

Health Filaments are one of the clearest long-term survivability boosts. Every three collected increases Hazel’s health bar by a segment, and missed ones can be recovered through chapter replay. Many are tucked into side areas rather than lying directly on the main route.

If a chapter gives you room to explore, assume there may be a permanent reward somewhere off the obvious path. Look for grapple points, rooftops, caves, side trails, objects Hazel can make solid, or platforming chains that seem more optional than mandatory. Extra health makes later combat less punishing without changing your playstyle.

4. Read Notes When You Find Them

Readables are not required for basic survival, but they support the best way to experience South of Midnight: as a folklore-driven journey through Hazel’s world. They often sit in out-of-the-way places, so collecting them naturally teaches you to scan levels more carefully.

You do not need to turn the first playthrough into a checklist. Read what you find, let the details enrich the chapter, and use replay later for cleanup. That keeps the story moving while still giving you a reason to investigate corners.

5. Dodge Like It Is an Attack Button

Hazel does not rely on blocking. Her defensive rhythm is built around movement, and a well-timed dodge can trigger a Strand Blast that damages or staggers nearby Haints. That makes dodging part of your offense, especially in crowded arenas.

Watch enemy windups instead of staring only at Hazel’s combo. If a warning appears or an enemy starts committing to an attack, stop mashing and prepare to move. Clean dodges keep your health intact, create breathing room, and can turn enemy pressure into your own damage window.

6. Keep One Spell Ready for Emergencies

Push, Pull, and Weave are tempting to spend whenever they refresh, but South of Midnight is smoother when you hold at least one tool for interrupts. Many enemies are easier to manage when you break their momentum before a hit lands.

Weave can lock a Haint down long enough for a melee follow-up. Pull can bring a target into range or help deal with certain projectiles. Push creates space and can turn controlled positioning into damage. Think of spells as fight control, not just extra damage.

7. Chain Control Before Chasing Big Damage

Beginner combat gets easier when you stop trying to finish every enemy with one long melee string. Pull a target into range, use Weave to freeze the immediate threat, dodge when the arena shifts, then Push or ranged attacks to reset spacing. A simple sequence that keeps Hazel safe is better than a greedy combo that gets interrupted.

This matters more as groups grow. Haints can pressure from different angles, and a single loose attacker can punish you while you focus another. Control first, damage second.

8. Unravel Downed Haints Quickly

When a Haint goes down, Unraveling it can restore health and help refresh spell cooldowns. That makes a downed enemy more than a defeated target; it is a recovery opportunity in the middle of the arena.

Do not leave a downed Haint sitting while you chase another enemy across the fight. If the area is safe enough, Unravel immediately. If another attack is incoming, dodge first, then return. The habit keeps Hazel supplied during longer encounters.

9. Save Health Sigils Until You Need the Reset

Combat arenas can include a green health sigil that restores health and refreshes spell cooldowns. Because it is limited, using it too early wastes one of your strongest mid-fight resets.

Try to enter each arena with your spells and health under control. Use the sigil when you are actually in trouble, when a boss or enemy wave has pushed you low, or when a full spell refresh will let you regain control. Also remember that spotting a sigil can be a clue that a fight is coming.

10. Replay Chapters for Cleanup, Not Panic

South of Midnight supports chapter replay, so missed collectibles are not the end of the run. That matters because some paths lock behind forward movement and some Health Filaments or readables are hidden well enough to miss naturally.

For a first playthrough, explore thoughtfully but keep moving when the story has momentum. After finishing a chapter or the game, replay is the better place to chase missed Filaments, Readables, Tin Flips, Floofs, achievements, or trophies with a route in mind.

11. Use Accessibility and Difficulty Thoughtfully

South of Midnight has options that can reduce friction, including lower combat intensity and skip-style assists for some demanding sequences. Use them when they help the game stay enjoyable, especially if you are here for the story, music, art direction, and folklore atmosphere.

One caveat: achievement and trophy goals may care about settings, especially no-damage boss challenges. For a normal beginner run, comfort comes first. For a completion run, check the specific goal before changing options mid-attempt.

12. Keep Weaver’s Edition Extras Separate From Progress

The Weaver’s Edition bundles the game with digital extras such as art, music, comic, video, and documentary content. Those extras are not upgrade paths, combat systems, or chapter mechanics.

If you own that edition, enjoy the extras outside your gameplay plan. For Hazel’s actual progress, focus on Floofs, Health Filaments, spell upgrades, readable exploration, and chapter replay.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. A player follows the Guiding Strand without checking side paths - the main route moves the story forward, but hidden rewards often sit just outside it.

  2. A player hoards Floofs instead of buying helpful upgrades - early perks can solve real combat problems before they snowball.

  3. A player ignores Health Filaments after missing one - chapter replay lets you recover missed permanent health upgrades.

  4. A player treats dodge as pure defense - a well-timed dodge can stagger or damage nearby enemies and create an opening.

  5. A player spends every spell the moment it refreshes - holding Push, Pull, or Weave for interrupts can prevent avoidable damage.

  6. A player tunnels on one Haint during group fights - arena control matters more than finishing one target while others attack freely.

  7. A player leaves downed Haints without Unraveling them - Unravel can restore health and help bring spells back sooner.

  8. A player grabs the health sigil too early - saving it for a real danger moment gives you a stronger reset.

  9. A player turns the first run into a full checklist - replay is better for cleanup once you understand chapter flow.

  10. A player treats edition extras like gameplay systems - art, music, comic, video, and documentary extras do not change Hazel’s build.
