Star Wars: Republic Commando is a first-person tactical shooter built around Delta Squad, shield management, squad orders, context commands, revives, bacta stations, and the modular DC-17m weapon.
This is a beginner campaign fundamentals guide. Multiplayer and port features vary by version: original PC storefronts describe online/LAN modes, Xbox currently lists local/shared multiplayer, and Aspyr says the PS4, PS5, and Switch versions focus on the single-player campaign without multiplayer.
Content note: ESRB rates the checked listing T for Teen with Blood and Gore and Violence. This guide keeps combat discussion non-graphic and focused on play.
Essential Tips
1. Let Shields Set Your Tempo
When shields break, stop acting like you are still safe.
Your shield recharges, but health loss sticks until you reach bacta. If the shield drops, break line of sight, fall back behind squad pressure, or use the room layout before taking another trade.
2. Read Squad Icons Constantly
Delta Squad’s status is part of your HUD, not background flavor.
The squad icons show each squadmate’s condition and direction. If one turns red or drifts away from the group, fix that problem before pushing deeper into the room.
3. Use Commands Before the Fight Goes Bad
Republic Commando rewards early orders more than panic orders.
Commandos can move, hold, focus fire, revive, slice, breach, plant charges, use turrets, take sniper positions, and use bacta. Do not wait until every enemy is active before assigning the squad’s job.
4. Focus Fire on Tough Targets
The fastest way to simplify a messy room is to make everyone shoot the same problem.
Use target focus when one enemy is absorbing too much attention or blocking the objective. It is especially useful when your squad is spread across positions and you need their damage pointed at one threat.
5. Treat Form Up as Your Reset Button
If the squad is scattered, bring them back before moving on.
Form Up recalls available squadmates behind you. Use it after a breach, turret setup, sniper hold, or revive chain so nobody is left exposed in the last room.
6. Cancel Positions When Priorities Change
A good position can become a bad order.
Cancel Manoeuvres releases squadmates from special tasks. If a commando is stuck on a sniper spot, turret, or demolition order while enemies flank, cancel and reassign instead of hoping the AI abandons the job at the right time.
7. Revive Safely, Not Automatically
A revive order can save the run or get the next commando downed.
If you are incapacitated, recalling a squadmate to revive you is fast but risky in a hot room. If the squad still has good cover and active enemies are close, maintaining current orders may buy enough space before the revive happens.
8. Use Bacta for the Whole Squad
Bacta is not only your personal refill.
Send damaged squadmates to bacta when the room allows it. A squadmate who starts the next encounter injured is more likely to collapse during the first breach, turret use, or focused target.
9. Learn the DC-17m as Three Jobs
Your main weapon changes roles instead of being one universal answer.
Use the blaster attachment for ordinary short- and medium-range fighting. Use the sniper attachment when range matters and you have time to aim. Save anti-armor shots for armored enemies, heavy targets, or situations where an explosive arc is worth the scarce ammo.
10. Keep the Sidearm in Reserve
The sidearm buys time when ammo discipline slips.
The DC-15s sidearm recharges slowly and stays with you. It is not your strongest room-clearing tool, but it helps conserve primary ammo and gives you something to use when other weapons are dry.
11. Pick Detonators for the Enemy Type
Grenades are not interchangeable.
Thermals are your general explosive option. EC detonators are the better answer to droids and electronics. Flashbugs are for biological enemies. Sonic detonators stick and trigger by proximity, so think about where enemies will move before throwing.
12. Protect Commandos on Fixed Jobs
A squadmate on a turret, sniper point, or objective is still vulnerable.
A commando performing a task may not react well to enemies rushing their position. Cover them during slicing, demolition, turrets, sniper posts, anti-armor positions, and breaches, then recall or cancel once the job is done.
Squad Command Habits
| Command or Task | Use It For | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|
| Engage Target | Concentrating squad fire | Wasting the whole squad on a low-priority enemy |
| Search and Destroy | Pushing the squad forward aggressively | Overextending before you are ready |
| Form Up | Regrouping behind you | Pulling squadmates off useful positions too early |
| Secure Area | Holding a pointed location | Leaving the squad isolated |
| Cancel Manoeuvres | Freeing squadmates from tasks | Forgetting to reassign them afterward |
| Context commands | Breach, slice, demo, turret, sniper, anti-armor, bacta | Exposed commandos need protection |
For a first clear, keep the command loop simple: identify the biggest threat, assign a useful position or focus target, cover the commando doing the job, then Form Up or Cancel before advancing.
Weapons and Detonators
- DC-17m blaster: Your baseline weapon for normal infantry pressure at short and medium range.
- Sniper attachment: Use it when distance and accuracy matter, but do not treat it as a panic weapon.
- Anti-armor attachment: Save it for armored units and heavy targets. It fires in an arc, so respect spacing and splash danger.
- DC-15s sidearm: Use it to conserve ammo or finish weaker threats while it has charge.
- Secondary weapons: You can carry one at a time, so swap only when the next room benefits from the new role.
- EC detonators: Prioritize them against droids and electronic targets.
- Flashbugs: Use them when biological enemies need to be stunned before a push.
- Sonic detonators: Place them with movement in mind because their proximity behavior rewards prediction.
- Thermals: Use them for clusters, hallways, and general explosive pressure.
- Melee: The wrist blade is very close range. Use it deliberately, not as a replacement for safe shooting.
Ammo pressure is part of the design. If a fight looks ordinary, do not open with anti-armor shots or rare secondary ammo just because it is equipped.
Route and Version Notes
The campaign is commonly grouped into Geonosis, the Assault Ship, and Kashyyyk. This guide does not map every objective, collectible, trophy, or encounter trigger; use it as a first-clear habits guide rather than a route script.
Difficulty support includes Easy, Medium, and Hard completion recognition. Start lower if squad command timing is new to you. Hard-specific enemy pressure, revive timing, and ammo routing belong in a dedicated route.
Platform behavior needs care:
| Version Area | Safe Draft Claim |
|---|---|
| PC storefronts | Steam and GOG list the classic PC release; multiplayer activity varies |
| Xbox | Xbox lists Xbox One and Series X |
| PlayStation | PlayStation Store lists PS4, 1 player, Remote Play, and a PS5 compatibility caveat |
| Switch | Nintendo lists Single system (1), Switch support, and Switch 2 compatibility consistent with Switch |
| Aspyr ports | Aspyr says PS4/PS5/Switch focus on single-player and do not include multiplayer |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not keep fighting with broken shields - Back off before health damage turns a recoverable mistake into a wipe.
-
Do not ignore red squad icons - A downed squadmate weakens every order you give after that.
-
Do not leave commandos on old positions - Form Up or Cancel when the room has changed.
-
Do not revive in the open by habit - Stabilize the fight before pulling someone into danger.
-
Do not spend anti-armor ammo on minor enemies - Save scarce explosives for armored threats and heavy targets.
-
Do not throw every detonator the same way - Match thermals, ECs, flashbugs, and sonics to the enemy and space.
-
Do not abandon a squadmate during slicing or demolition - Cover objective tasks until the action finishes.
-
Do not swap secondary weapons blindly - The new pickup replaces your current secondary weapon.
-
Do not assume multiplayer is the same on every platform - PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch listings describe different capabilities.
-
Do not use all-weapons cheats on a first campaign run - Checked support notes warn that a cheat can break an objective prompt in Operation Hammer Fist.
