SteamWorld Dig 2 is a one-player platform mining Metroidvania developed by Image & Form, now Thunderful Games. You play as Dorothy, digging below El Machino, selling resources, upgrading gear, finding cogs and artifacts, opening pneumatic-tube waypoints, and using new tools to reach places that were impossible earlier.
ESRB rates SteamWorld Dig 2 E10+ for Fantasy Violence. This guide stays spoiler-light and focused on beginner fundamentals, not exact secret routes or 100% cleanup.
This is a first-play tips guide. It does not include a full walkthrough, artifact map, cog route, boss guide, Trials route, achievement guide, or exact upgrade order.
Essential Tips
1. Dig Paths You Can Climb Back Out Of
Your tunnel shape matters as much as the ore you collect.
Early on, avoid narrow drops that leave no route back to town. Mine in wide side-to-side passes, leave platforms or wall-jumpable space, and keep a clean path to the surface or nearest pneumatic tube. This makes it easier to sell resources, refill your lamp, and recover if your inventory fills sooner than expected.
2. Return to El Machino Before You Are Forced To
A full bag or fading lamp should trigger a town trip.
The early loop is simple: dig, collect ore and gems, return to El Machino, sell, upgrade, and go back down. Do not wait until your lamp is nearly gone and your bag is packed before turning around. Regular trips keep the run controlled and turn resources into permanent progress.
3. Upgrade Around Your Current Bottleneck
The best upgrade is the one solving the problem you are actually hitting.
If darkness is ending trips, improve the lamp. If resources are getting discarded, improve the bag. If digging is slow or enemies are taking too long, look at tool upgrades. If traversal is blocking you, wait for the next movement tool before forcing a route. SteamWorld Dig 2 is built around upgrading gear to go deeper, not around buying one fixed beginner build.
4. Treat Cogs as Flexible, Not Permanent
Cog mods can be rearranged as your needs change.
Cogs activate unlocked skills, and SteamWorld Wiki notes that skills can be deactivated to reclaim cogs for another skill. Use that flexibility. A resource-focused setup can help during mining, while a combat or survival setup may make more sense before a dangerous cave or boss path.
5. Open Pneumatic Tubes Immediately
Waypoints turn long climbs into manageable routes.
Pneumatic tubes are the game’s fast-travel system. When you find one, make opening it a priority before you push much farther. A new tube gives you a safer return line to El Machino, shortens upgrade trips, and makes it less painful to revisit an area after finding a new tool.
6. Enter Caves, But Do Not Force Every Reward
Caves are valuable, but some rewards are ability-gated.
Caves often hold cogs, artifacts, ore, or tool unlocks. Go inside when you find them, but pay attention to the room language. If a cave clearly expects a tool you do not have yet, leave a mental note and come back later. Backtracking is normal Metroidvania progress, not failure.
7. Listen and Look for Secret Signals
Secrets are part of the upgrade economy.
The wiki notes that many cogs are in secret areas, and artifacts are tied to cave and play-area secrets. Slow down near suspicious walls, unusual blocks, odd alcoves, and cave side paths. Keep this spoiler-safe: search carefully, but do not turn your first run into a map-checking chore.
8. Visit Town After Artifact Finds
Artifacts can lead to more than collection progress.
The SteamWorld Wiki says artifact collection can trigger a speech bubble over an El Machino character, indicating a free blueprint for a cog mod. After a productive cave or secret run, return to town, sell resources, check the workbench, and talk to marked characters before diving again.
9. Use New Tools as Exploration Keys
Pressure Bomb, Jackhammer, Hookshot, and Jet Engine all change the map.
Do not think of tools only as combat or movement options. Pressure Bombs can break blocks you cannot reach normally, the Jackhammer handles tougher block types, the Hookshot crosses gaps and grabs resources, and the Jet Engine opens vertical and aerial routes. After each major tool, revisit older barriers with new eyes.
10. Fight From Position, Not Panic
Most early enemies are safer when you make space first.
Beetles charge, ceiling enemies fire, snails and cacti can create messy hazard chains, and boss fights add heavier projectiles later. Leave room above or behind you, step away from unstable blocks before swinging, and use terrain or water when the room allows it. A small pause before attacking often saves more health than rushing.
11. Break Hazard Blocks Deliberately
Falling stones, cracked blocks, and cactus chains can punish casual digging.
Before breaking a cracked block or cutting into a hazard cluster, look at what will move, fall, explode, or fire afterward. SteamWorld Dig 2 rewards digging quickly, but it punishes digging blindly around traps and physics objects. Make an exit path before you start a reaction.
12. Keep 100% Cleanup for Later
Completion rules are fussier than normal exploration.
Cogs, artifacts, hidden characters, caves, and some cave resources can be part of secret tracking. Finish a normal route first, then use a map or checklist when you are ready to chase full percentages, challenge caves, and gold-star categories.
Mining and Resource Habits
| Situation | Beginner Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Starting a new shaft | Mine wide side-to-side passes | Reveals ore while preserving a return path |
| Inventory filling | Go sell before discarding good resources | Money becomes upgrades; discarded resources are weaker value |
| Lamp running low | Return before darkness pressures decisions | Prevents rushed digging and avoidable damage |
| New pneumatic tube | Open it before continuing deep | Creates a waypoint for selling, upgrades, and backtracking |
| Cave entrance found | Check it while nearby | Caves often contain cogs, artifacts, ore, or tool progress |
| Suspicious wall or block | Mark it mentally if current tools fail | Many routes are meant for later abilities |
| Big resource haul | Bank it before risky combat | Death and danger are worse when your bag is full |
Upgrades and Cogs
-
Spend money to extend trip length: Lamp and bag improvements make each mining run more productive because you can stay underground longer and bring more value home.
-
Use tool upgrades to remove friction: Pickaxe, Pressure Bomb, Jackhammer, Hookshot, and Jet Engine upgrades all support deeper exploration in different ways. Buy for the obstacle you keep meeting.
-
Swap cogs for the next job: Since cog skills can be deactivated and cogs reclaimed, do not leave a setup equipped just because it helped ten minutes ago.
-
Separate upgrades from routes: Buying stronger gear is useful, but exact best orders depend on cost, level, and route context.
-
Check blueprint rewards: If artifact progress highlights someone in town, talk to them before assuming the workbench has nothing new.
-
Do not ignore survival mods: Resource-loss mitigation, health options, and safer return tools can be worth using when you are carrying expensive ore or learning a hazardous area.
Exploration and Secrets
SteamWorld Dig 2 wants you to revisit old terrain. A blocked passage is often a note for later, not a dead end. When you gain a new movement or digging tool, scan earlier areas for blocks, gaps, ceilings, water routes, and cave challenges that now make sense.
For a spoiler-light first playthrough, use three passes:
-
First pass: Follow the objective, open tubes, gather obvious ore, and enter caves you can solve.
-
Tool pass: After a new tool, revisit nearby blocked paths, suspicious walls, and caves that felt unfinished.
-
Cleanup pass: After credits or late-game mobility, use maps for exact cogs, artifacts, hidden characters, cave checkmarks, and percentage cleanup.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not dig straight down without a return plan - A messy shaft wastes time when your bag fills or your lamp runs low.
-
Do not stay underground with a full inventory - Selling resources is how mining becomes upgrades.
-
Do not leave pneumatic tubes unopened - Skipping a waypoint makes every later return trip longer.
-
Do not treat cogs as locked forever - Reclaiming and reallocating cogs is part of the upgrade system.
-
Do not force a cave reward that clearly needs a later tool - Backtracking is expected in a Metroidvania structure.
-
Do not break cracked blocks or cactus clusters from a bad position - Falling rocks and chain reactions can turn a simple room into damage.
-
Do not fight charging enemies in cramped spaces - Make room to jump, retreat, or let the enemy pass.
-
Do not assume every secret counts the same way for 100% - Completion tracking is more specific than casual exploration.
-
Do not spend every upgrade decision on damage - Light, inventory, mobility, and survival often improve a beginner run more than raw offense.
-
Do not use an exact secret route from memory - Cogs, artifacts, cave resources, and hidden areas need a checked route for reliable cleanup.
