Super Stardust HD Tips

Super Stardust HD tips for weapons, boost, bombs, pickups, planets, scoring, Impact Mode, and surviving Housemarque's PS3 arcade shooter.

On this page

Super Stardust HD is fast because the whole planet is the arena. You are not just dodging from left to right; you are wrapping around a spherical playfield, reading asteroid material, swapping weapons, and deciding when a bomb or boost is worth spending. The best runs come from calm priority choices, not from holding fire and hoping the screen clears itself.

This guide focuses on the PlayStation 3 version of Super Stardust HD. Use it for Arcade and Planet play first, then carry the same movement and pickup habits into score chasing, boss attempts, and add-on modes.

Essential Tips

1. Keep Moving Around the Planet

Stillness is usually the start of a lost life. Because threats can wrap into view from several angles, a strong basic pattern is to orbit while firing into the densest danger, then cut through gaps before the ring closes. Do not drift so far that you meet debris from behind, but do not park in one place waiting for the perfect lane either.

Movement also buys time to read pickups. If the screen is crowded, clear the nearest objects first, slide toward open space, and only then decide whether to chase a token. A shield, bomb, or extra life is valuable, but crossing the planet blindly for it can cost more than the pickup is worth.

2. Match Weapons to Asteroid Material

The weapon swap is not decoration. Rock Crusher is your default answer to rock asteroids, Gold Melter handles gold asteroids, and Ice Splitter handles ice targets. Matching the tool to the material clears faster and helps your score plan because the right weapon keeps the wave under control before fragments spread across the planet.

Treat this as a default rule, not a reason to freeze. If an enemy is crowding you, use the weapon that reaches it cleanly. If a boss exposes a weak point and your strongest upgraded weapon can hit safely, stay alive first. The habit that matters is recognizing material quickly so your hands swap before the screen becomes a mess.

3. Control Upgrade Tokens Instead of Grabbing Everything

Weapon tokens can cycle, so patience matters. If the next planet or current wave favors a specific color, clear space around the token and wait for the upgrade you actually want. Running into every token immediately can leave a key weapon underpowered while a less useful one gets ahead.

This is especially important early. Building Rock Crusher makes the opening planet cleaner, then later planets ask you to respect gold and ice threats. Plan upgrades around what the game is throwing at you now and what is coming next, not around whichever token happens to be closest.

4. Save Bombs for Screen Control

Bombs are panic buttons, but that does not mean they should be wasted at the first sign of pressure. A bomb is strongest when it prevents a life loss, clears a blocked lane, or solves a boss moment that would otherwise trap you. Spending one for a small cluster can leave you helpless when the real wave lands.

Before you bomb, check whether boost or a clean weapon swap can solve the same problem. If you are surrounded, pinned near debris, or boxed in by enemies and asteroids at once, use the bomb decisively. Hesitating until contact is already unavoidable is worse than spending it early enough to regain control.

5. Use Boost as Both Escape and Attack

Boost is more than a dash. During the move, your ship can break through danger, and it can also damage targets you pass through. That makes it a strong escape when the planet closes in, a way to punch through static threats, and a tool for collecting grouped tokens without weaving through every hazard.

The catch is recharge. After boosting, play as if the option is gone until it is ready again. Do not boost into the middle of a wave unless the exit is clear or the reward is worth the risk. Strong players keep a mental rhythm for the recharge and avoid creating a second emergency before the first escape tool returns.

6. Read Pickups Through Color and Position

The game gets too busy for leisurely inspection. Learn the colors and shapes of the pickups you care about, then glance with peripheral vision while your main focus stays on survival. Extra lives, shields, bombs, point tokens, and weapon upgrades all compete for attention, but not all of them justify the same route.

Approach pickups from the safe side. If a token sits behind a wall of fragments, clear the wall first or let the token go. If several tokens are grouped, boost can collect them quickly, but be careful around weapon upgrades you did not intend to take. A fast pickup route is only good when it leaves you in a playable position afterward.

7. Respect Each Planet’s Main Threat

The early planets teach the weapon plan directly. Lave rewards Rock Crusher because rock asteroids dominate. Coventina pushes Gold Melter because gold targets become the main concern. Nemain asks you to bring Ice Splitter up because ice targets become much more common.

Later planets mix threats more aggressively, so the lesson is not to memorize one weapon and ignore the rest. The lesson is to identify the planet’s main material, keep that weapon ready, and still swap when mixed waves appear. If a run collapses on the same planet repeatedly, your upgrade order is probably part of the problem.

8. Use Wide Fire When Crowded

When enemies and fragments press from multiple angles, narrow focus can make you miss the threat arriving from behind. A circular firing motion can thin nearby danger and create a breathing lane. Use it when the screen gets crowded, then return to directed fire once you have space.

This is not a substitute for aiming. Spinning fire forever lowers damage on priority targets and can let bosses or durable objects linger. Think of wide fire as a reset: it buys a second, clears small pieces, and opens a route so you can resume targeted shooting.

9. Treat Bosses Like Space Problems

Boss fights are easier when you enter with a clean arena. Clear loose debris before committing to close-range damage, because stray fragments can interrupt a good angle or force a bomb. Watch for exposed parts, attack when the lane is clear, and keep enough distance to react when the boss changes behavior.

Do not burn every bomb just because a boss appears. If the boss has multiple exposed sections or a short burst window, a well-timed bomb can be excellent, but survival still comes first. Use boost to reposition through danger when needed, then settle back into steady damage.

10. Handle Impact Mode as a Different Game

Impact Mode changes the rules by making boost the center of play. Instead of relying on the normal weapon plan, you chain boost through meteors and enemies, keeping the streak alive as long as targets remain in reach. The same awareness helps, but the priority shifts from weapon matching to boost pathing.

In that mode, look one target beyond the one you are about to hit. If your boost line ends in empty space, your chain dies. If it ends near another target, you keep pressure and multiplier growth going. Practice the normal game first, because strong movement and pickup judgment make Impact Mode much less chaotic.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not stop moving - standing still lets the planet wrap danger into you from angles you are not watching.
  2. Do not use one weapon for every asteroid - matching material clears faster and keeps waves manageable.
  3. Do not grab every upgrade immediately - wait for the token color that serves the current planet or next threat.
  4. Do not spend bombs on minor pressure - save them for traps, boss windows, and true screen control.
  5. Do not boost without an exit - a dash into the center of danger can leave you stranded during recharge.
  6. Do not chase pickups through debris - clear the lane first or let the token go.
  7. Do not ignore mixed waves - even a planet with one main material can throw other targets at you.
  8. Do not spin fire forever - use wide fire to recover space, then return to aimed damage.
  9. Do not enter boss damage phases with clutter nearby - loose debris can ruin a safe attack lane.
  10. Do not play Impact Mode like Arcade - boost chaining replaces the normal weapon rhythm.
