The Elder Scrolls: Arena Beginner Tips - Classes, Dungeons, Magic, and Travel

Beginner tips for The Elder Scrolls: Arena covering character creation, classes, dungeons, resting, spells, services, money, and travel.

On this page

The Elder Scrolls: Arena is the original PC action RPG developed and published by Bethesda Softworks. This guide is for the original Arena, not Daggerfall, Morrowind, Skyrim, or Online. Expect permanent class choices, old-school dungeon survival, city services, and world-map travel rather than modern Elder Scrolls convenience systems.

Arena is easier to enjoy when you treat the first hours as a survival routine. Build a character who can live through the opening dungeon, save methodically, learn where towns hide their services, and spend gold on staying alive before chasing risky side trips.

Essential Tips

1. Pick your class deliberately

Arena class choice is permanent and defines armor access, weapon options, spell points, thievery ability, health growth, and starting equipment. Do not assume you can drift into any build later the way you might in newer Elder Scrolls games.

For a first character, decide whether you want survivability or magic access. A plate-capable warrior style is more forgiving in early melee. A magic-capable class gives you Mages Guild spell services and custom spells, but you need to manage gold, spell points, and equipment limits.

2. Do not treat the class quiz as a build planner

The generated-class questions are part of Arena’s personality, but they can hand you a class you do not understand. New players are better served by selecting a class directly, then using the early game to learn how its restrictions work.

After class, you choose name, gender, province/race, stats, and appearance. Put bonus points into what your class actually needs. A fragile caster and a front-line warrior are not trying to survive the opening dungeon in the same way.

3. Save like progress is fragile

Arena does not behave like a modern autosave-heavy RPG. Save after major kills, before doors, after valuable loot, before risky travel, and after a clean rest. Keep multiple slots so a bad save does not trap you inches from death.

The game also has save restrictions in some interiors. If you cannot save where you are standing, step back into a valid area and make the save before pushing deeper.

4. Rest from a position you can defend

Resting is useful, and the story even pushes you to rest so Ria can contact you through dreams, but dungeon rest is not automatically safe. If you rest on ordinary floor space, enemies can interrupt you.

When possible, use raised surfaces or rooms with simple sightlines. Mark good rest points on the automap. If no safe perch exists, use a small room with one entrance, face the doorway, save first, and be ready to cancel the plan.

5. Buy survival before luxuries

Arena’s economy is harsh because every useful action competes for gold: rooms, repairs, identification, potions, weapons, armor, spells, and custom spell purchases. Spend early money on tools that prevent lost progress.

Healing and disease/paralysis answers matter more than stylish gear. If your class can use magic, the Mages Guild becomes a core stop. If you rely on weapons and armor, the blacksmith matters just as much because damaged gear and unsold loot both slow you down.

6. Use fast travel for real destinations

Arena has wilderness, but walking out of town is not the practical way to reach another town or main destination. Use the world-map travel system when you need to move between towns and dungeons.

Inside a town, ask NPCs for directions. They can point you toward shops, guilds, inns, temples, palaces, and other services. Once you learn how directions and the automap work together, cities become much less confusing.

7. Respect nightfall

Daytime is service time. Shops, guilds, palaces, temples, and useful NPC traffic are easier to work with while the town is awake. At night, many places close and enemies can appear even in town.

Inns are the exception that keep your route stable. If darkness catches you unprepared, find an inn instead of wandering until something finds you.

8. Treat dungeons as mapping problems

Arena is primarily a dungeon crawl. Hug walls so the map fills in cleanly, watch for ambushes from behind, and add map notes for rest spots, stairs, keys, exits, and suspicious branches.

Main-quest and ruler-quest dungeons are much more serious than minor random dungeons. Do not enter a major dungeon just because it is nearby. Enter because a quest sent you there and you have the supplies to survive the return trip.

9. Keep potions ready, not buried

Disease and paralysis are not minor annoyances. Carry Cure Disease and Free Action answers when you can afford them. Health potions also vanish quickly in hard dungeon stretches, so restocking before a long crawl is part of preparation.

Magic-capable characters can solve some problems with spells, but potion backups still matter. A spell you cannot cast under pressure is not a plan.

10. Do not import later-series money habits

For Arena beginner play, think in terms of shops and services, not Daggerfall-style banking. The practical loop is loot, sell to blacksmiths, repair gear, buy potions, rent rooms, identify magic items, and pay for spells.

If you see advice about bank loans, deposits, or letters of credit, verify that it is about Arena before using it. Those mechanics are easy to confuse with later Elder Scrolls entries.

Character Creation Priorities

ChoiceBeginner Priority
ClassDecide armor, weapon, magic, and survival style up front
Race/provincePick for your class plan, not later-series assumptions
StatsBoost primary combat or casting needs
Starting weaponUse what your class can handle immediately
Magic accessConfirm your class actually has spell points

The key Arena habit is accepting restrictions. If your class has no spell points, Mages Guild spellmaking will not turn that character into a caster. If your class cannot wear heavier armor, money alone will not fix the weakness. Build with those limits in mind.

Dungeon and Resting Habits

HabitWhy It Works
Save before doorsRooms can hide sudden fights
Mark rest spotsRecovery routes matter in long dungeons
Hug wallsCleaner automap coverage reduces backtracking
Watch behind youAmbushes can start outside your view
Carry curesDisease and paralysis can end a run
Leave minor dungeons earlySurvival beats pride when supplies run low

When a dungeon starts going badly, retreat before your last potion. Arena punishes greed. The opening warning is practical advice: grab what helps you survive, but do not let treasure turn a safe exit into a death loop.

Spells, Services, Money, and Travel

ServiceUse It For
InnRooms, safer town rest, bartender quests, artifact leads
BlacksmithBuying gear, selling loot, repairs
Mages GuildPotions, magic items, identification, spells, spellmaking
TempleHealing, disease cures, poison cures
NPC directionsFinding services inside town
World mapTraveling between towns and dungeons

Spellmaking is one of Arena’s defining systems, but it is gated by class and money. The interface lets a magic-using character name a spell, choose save type and target for offensive spells, combine up to three effects, and buy the result into a limited custom spellbook. Start with simple, affordable utility before experimenting with expensive custom tools.

Money management is plain but important. Blacksmiths are your main selling outlet, so route loot back through stores instead of carrying it forever. Mages identify blue mystery items and sell the potions that prevent the worst dungeon failures. Inns cost gold, but they also keep night travel from becoming a needless fight.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not choose a class blindly - Class choice controls too much of Arena’s survival kit.

  2. Do not assume every class casts spells - No spell points means no normal spellcasting plan.

  3. Do not save in only one slot - A bad save can trap you near enemies, bugs, or low health.

  4. Do not rest on open dungeon floors when you have options - Safer rest positions reduce interruptions.

  5. Do not enter every dungeon you find - Random dungeons and major quest dungeons have very different risk.

  6. Do not wander at night looking for services - Use daytime for errands and inns for safe recovery.

  7. Do not hoard unidentified magic gear forever - Mages Guild identification turns mystery loot into useful equipment or sale value.

  8. Do not spend all gold on weapons - Potions, repairs, rooms, and spell services are survival expenses.

  9. Do not walk the wilderness expecting another city - Use world-map travel for actual destination changes.

  10. Do not follow Daggerfall banking advice for Arena - Arena beginner money flow is shops, services, loot, and repairs.
