THE FINALS, developed and published by Embark Studios, is a free-to-play team shooter built around Cashout objectives, Light/Medium/Heavy builds, gadgets, destructible arenas, seasonal progression, and live-service ranked updates.
Content note: PlayStation lists THE FINALS as ESRB Teen with Violence, Users Interact, and In-Game Purchases. This guide stays non-graphic and focused on play.
This guide is for new and returning players learning Quick Cash, Cashout, World Tour fundamentals, and early ranked preparation. It is not a Season 11 melee guide, weapon tier list, current best-build sheet, exact Ranked Score formula, store guide, or anti-cheat support article.
Patch note: This guide covers the end of Season 10 and Season 11 preview period. Check current melee, ranked, modes, gadgets, store, and anti-cheat details before treating it as current-meta advice.
Essential Tips
1. Play the Cashout, Not the Scoreboard
Eliminations matter when they protect money.
In Cashout-style modes, your real job is to move the Cashbox, own the station, defend the timer, or stop a steal. A fight that pulls your whole squad away from the objective can look good on the scoreboard and still lose the round.
2. Stay Close Enough to Trade
A solo entry usually becomes a free elimination.
You do not need to stack in one doorway, but you should be close enough for two teammates to shoot the same target, cover a revive, or punish a steal. If you rotate away from the squad, ping or call the route before the fight starts.
3. Learn One Build First
Light, Medium, and Heavy teach different habits.
Light rewards movement and flanks, Medium teaches support and utility timing, and Heavy teaches space control and demolition. Pick one build for your first sessions, learn its survivability and movement limits, then branch out.
4. Use Practice Range Before Live Testing
Gadgets and specializations need muscle memory.
Test cooldowns, ranges, movement tools, recoil, melee timing, and destructible surfaces in Practice Range before relying on them in ranked or World Tour. A gadget you understand late is weaker than a simple tool you use on time.
5. Break Routes With a Purpose
Destruction is strongest when it changes the fight.
Use holes in walls, floors, and ceilings to create new entries, remove enemy cover, drop a Cashout, or escape a bad angle. Random demolition can also delete your own cover or expose your team to every nearby squad.
6. Defend Around the Cashout
Standing on the station is not the same as controlling it.
Hold crossfires, nearby cover, stairs, roofs, windows, and breach angles that let you stop a steal. If all three players stare at the station from the same corner, one explosive, flank, or ceiling break can clear the whole defense.
7. Watch the Timer
Most teams get desperate near completion.
As a Cashout nears the end, expect enemies to spend every tool they have. Save a defensive answer, hold a steal-stopping angle, and avoid chasing a low-health opponent so far that nobody can contest the station.
8. Start Fights With Tools
Gadgets should create the opening.
A grenade, breach, jump pad, shield, heal, scan, goo wall, zipline, or canister can make the gunfight easier before the first shot. If your squad pushes first and remembers gadgets second, you are fighting harder than necessary.
9. Revive From Cover
A bad revive can turn one loss into three.
Use smoke, goo, shields, broken terrain, doors, or teammate pressure before reviving. If the enemy is watching the body, it is often better to move the fight, win space, or wait for a safer angle than to force the revive immediately.
10. Reset After Every Fight
Another team can follow the noise.
After a wipe or defense, reload, heal, move, rebuild cover, check the Cashout timer, and watch the next entrance. Standing still in the same damaged room gives later attackers a better fight than the first team had.
11. Keep One Escape or Stall Option
Spending every cooldown invites a punish.
Before you push, know what gets you out or buys seconds: movement, cover, goo, shield, breach, smoke, heal, or a teammate’s angle. If every tool is already spent, wait a moment or reposition before committing.
12. Treat Ranked Details as Seasonal
Rules and scoring are live-service systems.
Use ranked to practice objective discipline, team timing, and survival only after you understand the Cashout loop. Check the current season screen before trusting old Ranked Score math, map pools, placement rules, party limits, or reward details.
Squad and Cashout Habits
- Choose the first objective quickly: Decide whether your squad is opening a vault, intercepting another team, or setting up near a station.
- Move the Cashbox with cover: The carrier needs teammates clearing the route and watching vertical angles.
- Do not all defend the same doorway: Spread just enough to cover steals, flanks, ceilings, and rotations without isolating one player.
- Break enemy setups before entering: Open a new wall, remove a floor, or use canisters before walking into a predictable choke.
- Stay alive as the last player: In modes with team wipe penalties or respawn pressure, surviving long enough for teammates to return can be better than forcing a hopeless steal.
- Leave after the objective is safe: When the Cashout finishes or the fight is no longer useful, rotate instead of farming damage in a ruined room.
Build and Gadget Habits
- Light: Use speed, flanks, scouting, and exits. Avoid standing still and trading damage with heavier builds.
- Medium: Stay close enough to heal, revive, move the squad, or add utility. Medium tools are strongest when teammates can use the opening.
- Heavy: Claim space, protect teammates, and reshape buildings. Slow movement means overextending is harder to escape.
- Specializations: Pick one that matches the job your squad needs: mobility, support, control, demolition, defense, or disruption.
- Gadgets: Bring tools that solve objective problems, not just damage problems. Mobility, cover, detection, breach, revive, and stall tools all win Cashouts.
- Reserve choices: When a mode allows equipment swaps between rounds or from reserves, change for the arena and enemy approach rather than copying a generic loadout.
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Changes | How to Use It |
|---|---|---|
| Cashout ownership | Money goes to the team that controls the station when the deposit completes | Defend the timer, not just the room |
| Steal timing | Last-second steals can flip a round | Hold a clear angle on the station as the timer ends |
| Multiple teams | Fights can collapse into 3v3v3 or 3v3v3v3 pressure | Finish quickly, reset, and expect another push |
| Destructible floors | Objectives and players can move vertically during fights | Attack from above or below instead of only using doors |
| Temporary cover | Walls, roofs, and buildings can disappear | Always keep a fallback angle |
| Carriables and canisters | Arena objects can pressure rooms without spending core cooldowns | Throw them before committing expensive gadgets |
| Build health gaps | Light, Medium, and Heavy survive different amounts of damage | Take fights that fit your build’s job |
| Practice Range | Tools can be tested without match pressure | Learn gadget timing before ranked |
| World Tour progression | Points and rewards are season systems | Check current stop rules and rewards before grinding |
| Patch volatility | Melee, ranked, gadgets, and modes can change | Refresh current details every major update |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not chase eliminations away from the Cashout - You can win a duel and still lose the objective.
-
Do not steal alone into a full team - Clear space or create chaos before committing to the station.
-
Do not hold the same exposed corner after being spotted - Destruction and gadgets make predictable cover temporary.
-
Do not demolish every wall around your own defense - You may give attackers cleaner sightlines than they had before.
-
Do not spend gadgets one at a time before the squad arrives - Stack timing so tools and teammates hit together.
-
Do not revive in the open - Cover the revive or move the fight first.
-
Do not ignore ceilings and floors - THE FINALS fights are vertical even when the objective marker looks flat.
-
Do not play Light like a Heavy - Speed and flanks matter more than standing still in direct trades.
-
Do not leave a Heavy stranded far from support - Slow builds need routes, cover, or team pressure to escape bad positions.
-
Do not take an untested build into ranked - Learn recoil, cooldowns, movement, and objective tools before risking ranked rounds.
