The early puzzles teach the game’s grammar. Mouse motors can drive belts. Bellows can push light objects. Seesaws redirect falling weights. Trampolines change bounce height depending on placement. When a new part appears, give it a simple test. Place it where the puzzle seems to suggest, run the machine, and watch only that interaction. Once you know what happens, add the next link. This keeps the screen from becoming a confusing pile of moving parts.
4. Run the Machine Early and Often
Do not wait until every part is placed before pressing go. The game lets you stop a failed attempt, revise the setup, and try again, so use each run as information. Watch the first thing that goes wrong, not the final failure.
If a ball misses a trampoline, move the trampoline before changing the rest of the machine. If a rope pulls in the wrong direction, fix the pulley path before adding more parts. If a motor never starts, find the trigger or power source. Small, local fixes are cleaner than rebuilding the entire contraption after every failed run.
5. Think in Chains, Not Single Parts
Most successful machines are built from links. A falling ball can hit a switch. The switch can start a fan. The fan can move a balloon. The balloon can hit scissors. The scissors can cut a rope. The rope can drop a bucket. The bucket can press something else.
Your job is to make each link hand off cleanly to the next. When you are stuck, describe the chain out loud in plain steps: “This needs to fall, then this needs to move left, then this needs to turn on.” If you cannot describe the next handoff, the machine probably needs a simpler connection.
6. Respect Placement Precision
The Incredible Machine is forgiving about retries, but it is not loose about placement. A part that is almost right may fail by a few pixels. A trampoline placed too high can ruin a bounce. A wall segment can block a rolling object. A rope can tug at the wrong angle. A cable may be too short or misaligned to drive the gear you meant to power.
When the idea is sound but the result barely misses, adjust the same part in small increments. Move it slightly left, right, up, or down and run again. Big changes can hide the real issue and create new failures.
7. Use Ropes and Cables Deliberately
Ropes, pulleys, gears, and cables are some of the trickiest tools because they make force travel through the machine. Before connecting them, decide what motion you want: lifting, pulling, cutting, turning, or transferring power.
For ropes, check the pull direction. A rope that looks connected can still yank the wrong way if the pulley route is poor. For cables and gears, check distance and alignment. If a powered object is not moving, the problem may be the connection rather than the power source.
8. Do Not Overuse Extra Parts
Some puzzles give you more parts than you need. Extra pieces can be decoys, alternate solution tools, or a way to make a messy solution work. They are not a command to fill the screen.
Build the shortest chain that satisfies the goal. If the machine works without a part, leave it out. A clean solution is easier to troubleshoot, easier to repeat, and less likely to break when one object arrives at a slightly different angle.
9. Use Freeform as a Workshop
Freeform mode is useful when a part confuses you. Try one motor, one gear, one fan, one trampoline, or one rope setup without the pressure of a puzzle goal. Change gravity or air pressure when the mode allows it and watch how objects behave.
Use this as practice, not as a replacement for puzzle solving. The original Freeform mode is best for learning cause and effect, building silly machines, and testing how parts interact. It is not the same as later entries that expand custom puzzle creation.
10. Keep Sequel Habits Out of the Original
Later Incredible Machine games add puzzles, parts, interfaces, sharing features, and different unlock behavior. Even More Incredible Machine includes the original puzzles plus many more, while TIM 2, TIM 3, Contraptions, and mobile versions have their own changes.
For the original game, focus on its simpler toolset: read the goal, study the fixed layout, place limited parts, run the chain, stop, adjust, and repeat. Advice built around later puzzle editors, extra parts, or modern sharing features can send you in the wrong direction.
