The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Beginner Guide - Tips and Tricks

Witcher 3 beginner preparation, healing, Places of Power, gear, and contracts, with separate advice for legacy 4.04 and the Remastered skill reset.

Before following a build, check which version you are playing. The main beginner route below describes legacy 4.04 gameplay. The Remastered section covers the changed skill system and settings on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. PS4, Xbox One, and the original Switch version are not interchangeable with those Remastered builds.

Content warning: The Witcher 3 contains blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and alcohol use. This guide stays non-graphic and avoids major story spoilers.

Quick answer: For a 4.04 start, prepare before contracts: read the bestiary, repair equipment, craft useful alchemy recipes, and keep strong alcohol for refills through meditation. Visit Places of Power and make manual saves while exploring. If you have upgraded to Remastered, inspect your reset skills before fighting; the old skill layout is no longer a reliable build plan.

Remastered: Check Before You Fight

The Remastered upgrade changes gameplay, not just graphics. Existing saves are compatible, but the skill overhaul resets your skills.

Before resuming a difficult quest:

  1. Open the skill screen. Skills now form a prerequisite-based tree, and each has three ranks. Reassign your points using the new descriptions.
  2. Check your preferred settings. Do not assume an old menu path or keybinding guide matches the new interface.
  3. Try a familiar encounter. Monster behavior and movement have changed, so reacquaint yourself with dodging and your chosen skills.

Meditation now uses a timelapse presentation. Nearby loot can be grouped into one window through a Gameplay setting, and untracked quests have distinct map markers that can be selected to track them.

Patch 5.01 fixes automatic blade-oil application working only after the feature is enabled during the current session, delayed dodge responses, and several skill/UI issues on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Apply the available updates for your platform before troubleshooting those problems.

Do not assume that Switch 2 has the same patch number or exact behavior as the other Remastered versions. The 5.01 rollout lists those other platforms and treats the Switch 2 update separately. Check your own version rather than copying a build label from another platform.

These transition tips are not a replacement for a complete Remastered build. In particular, do not copy the old twelve-slot progression or an old skill’s numerical bonus without checking the new tree.

Legacy 4.04: Start in White Orchard

White Orchard is a useful place to learn the loop before moving into larger regions. Work through its main objective, inspect the notice board, and try nearby exploration rather than immediately chasing every distant marker.

The region contains six Places of Power. Drawing from a new one grants an ability point and a temporary boost to its associated Sign. They are worth seeking out, but their surroundings may contain enemies; approach cautiously rather than assuming the stone marks a safe rest stop.

Make a manual save before heading away from your current quest. Autosaves exist, but a long stretch of exploration can still leave substantial progress at risk.

Choose a difficulty that lets you learn the systems. You can change it during the game. Raising difficulty is a choice about the experience you want, not a requirement for playing Geralt correctly.

Legacy 4.04: Combat Preparation

A contract is easier when you treat the investigation as part of the fight. Examine clues and check the bestiary entry for the target before committing to combat.

Use it to choose your oil, Signs, and bombs. A preparation checklist is more dependable than assuming the same attack sequence will work against every monster.

  • Quen provides a protective shield. Cast it before engaging when you have time to prepare.
  • Axii can interrupt an enemy by stunning it, giving you room to act.
  • Dodging makes a shorter movement; rolling creates more distance. Practice both rather than rolling after every attack.
  • Parrying is useful against suitable opponents, but not every attack can be parried.

Keep attacks short enough to react to the next enemy movement. If your defense keeps failing, change your spacing or preparation instead of simply repeating a longer combo.

The steel/silver distinction has exceptions, so do not reduce every enemy to “anything that looks like a person” versus “everything else.” Let the encounter and monster information guide your equipment choice.

Legacy 4.04: Alchemy and Healing

Crafting a potion or bomb establishes a supply you can refill; you do not gather its full original recipe after every use. Meditating outside combat with suitable strong alcohol, such as alcohest, replenishes depleted supplies.

ProblemWhat to do
You have a recipe but no itemCheck its ingredients in the Alchemy menu and craft it
Potion or bomb charges are emptyMeditate outside combat with refill alcohol available
You need protection against a monsterCheck the bestiary and apply a suitable oil
You need health on a hard difficultyCarry food and healing potions; do not rely on meditation healing

On the two lower difficulties, meditation restores health. On Blood and Broken Bones! and Death March!, it does not. Supply refills and health recovery are separate benefits.

Potions also raise toxicity. Read their effects and your current toxicity before drinking several in succession. More consumables at once are not automatically a better plan.

Oils are reusable after crafting. Their value comes from matching them to the target, not simply having one in the inventory. Check that your preparation actually applies to the enemy ahead.

Legacy 4.04: Quests and Equipment

Read settlement notice boards for contracts, side quests, and local information. During an investigation, use Witcher Senses to find relevant objects and clues.

Before a major story transition, finish side quests you particularly care about and keep a separate save. Some quests become unavailable after story cutoffs; the existence of an open world does not mean every task waits indefinitely.

Maintain your equipment during town visits. Blacksmiths and armorers repair gear, while grindstones and armorer’s tables offer temporary enhancements. Those improvements are useful before a contract even when you are not buying a replacement sword.

Keep crafted Witcher gear until you have checked the requirements for its upgraded version. Earlier pieces can be crafting components. Selling them merely because a random drop has a higher number can create extra work later.

Saddlebags increase carrying capacity. They are useful for exploration, but you should still review what you are carrying rather than letting every trip end with an overloaded inventory.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Using a legacy build after the Remastered reset - Read the new prerequisites and reassign skills.
  2. Assuming all platforms share a patch number - Check your installed version.
  3. Entering a contract unprepared - Read the bestiary and match your supplies.
  4. Selling all refill alcohol - Keep some for meditation.
  5. Expecting meditation to heal on hard settings - Bring another recovery option.
  6. Selling Witcher gear before checking recipes - An upgrade may need it.
  7. Exploring without manual saves - Save before a long detour.
