Until Dawn Beginner Tips - Choices, Totems, QTEs, and Remake Scope

Until Dawn beginner tips for the 2024 remake: choices, Butterfly Effects, totems, clues, QTEs, Don't Move, Stay Calm, accessibility, and PC/PS5 scope.

On this page

Until Dawn here means the 2024 PS5 and PC remake by Ballistic Moon for Sony’s PlayStation label, rebuilt from the 2015 Supermassive Games original. It is not the PS4 original, the VR shooter Rush of Blood, the VR prequel The Inpatient, or the 2025 movie.

Content warning: Until Dawn is rated Mature 17+ and includes intense horror violence, blood and gore, sexual themes, and strong language. This guide stays non-graphic and focuses on play.

This is a spoiler-light first-run guide. It covers habits that help you survive the night without listing exact deaths, all-survive routes, collectible locations, trophy steps, or ending requirements.

Essential Tips

1. Play the Remake as Its Own Route

The story foundation is familiar, but the presentation and collectibles changed.

The 2024 version keeps the core night on Blackwood Mountain, but it is not a simple texture pass. It uses a new camera approach, revised cinematography, an adjusted prologue, new interactions, small new areas, relocated original totems, and Hunger Totems. If you know the PS4 version, use that memory for the broad logic of choices and survival, not for exact pickup routes or every camera angle.

2. Accept That Choices Stick

Until Dawn is built around commitment.

The Butterfly Effect system tracks decisions and can update long after the moment that caused them. A choice can affect relationships, later scene options, who is present, and whether a character survives. Do not treat dialogue choices, interruptions, path splits, or object interactions as throwaway prompts just because the scene seems calm.

3. Pause Before Every Timed Prompt

Fast reactions matter, but panic causes most avoidable mistakes.

When the game asks you to choose quickly, read both options before committing. When a QTE starts, focus on the prompt rather than the scene. Many first-run failures come from watching the action like a movie and reacting a half-second late.

4. Search Rooms Before Advancing

Exploration gives context and warnings.

Until Dawn is not an inventory-heavy survival game, but clues and totems are still valuable. Clues fill in the mystery and can make later decisions easier to interpret. Totems show possible outcomes or warnings. A vision is not a guarantee, but it can teach you what kind of danger to watch for.

5. Treat Totems as Hints, Not Orders

A vision shows a possibility, not a forced future.

If a totem shows a character in danger, the answer is rarely to overcorrect blindly. Remember the image, watch for matching circumstances, and make the calmest choice when the scene arrives. Guidance-style visions are especially useful because they point toward decision moments where hesitation or the wrong instinct can matter.

6. Use Accessibility Without Apology

The remake gives you more control over challenge.

The PS5 version includes options such as customizable controls, audio-visual settings, QTE assistance, glint enhancement, adjustable difficulty, control reminders, and tutorial reminders. If you are here for the branching horror story, simplified QTEs or clearer exploration cues can make the experience better without changing the core decision pressure.

7. Understand Don’t Move and Stay Calm Early

These mechanics test stillness and composure differently from normal QTEs.

Don’t Move sequences can punish fidgeting, controller movement, or tense overcorrection. The remake also includes Stay Calm as an alternative for devices without gyroscopes or for players who prefer another challenge. Check the setting before a long session so you are not learning the rule during a high-pressure scene.

8. Update Before Troubleshooting

The remake had PC and PS5 fixes after launch.

Later updates addressed issues involving performance, save/load blockers, input behavior, trophies or achievements, Butterfly Effect display, shader compilation, Steam Deck behavior, and scene-specific stutter. If something feels broken rather than difficult, update first, then retry from the safest available scene or episode option.

Choices and Butterfly Effects

Until Dawn’s smartest trick is that important decisions do not always announce themselves. A small action can change a relationship meter. A relationship change can alter how someone responds later. A later response can decide whether a scene gives you room to recover.

For a first playthrough, avoid trying to engineer a perfect outcome from memory fragments. Instead, keep three rules in mind. First, choose consistently for the character you are controlling. Second, avoid reckless escalation when the game gives you a quieter option. Third, pay attention when the Butterfly Effect screen updates, because it is telling you that the game has recorded a branch.

Do not restart the entire game after every bad feeling. Until Dawn is designed to be replayed, and a messy first run is still a complete run. You will learn more by finishing the night, then using Episode Select or a new playthrough to chase specific outcomes later.

Exploration, Totems, and Clues

Exploration is slow by design. Walk corners, rotate interactable objects when the game allows it, and watch for glints or prompts around shelves, doors, pictures, boxes, and side paths. If another character is waiting, take that as a chance to check the room before moving on.

Clues usually matter because they change your understanding, not because they give you a weapon or key. Read them, connect them to the current mystery, and remember which character found them. Some discoveries make later decisions feel less random because you understand what the characters are reacting to.

Totems deserve a separate mental note. The remake relocates original totems and adds Hunger Totems, so do not rely on a 2015 pickup route. When you find one, watch the vision, identify the character if possible, and remember the situation rather than just the image. The useful question is: “What behavior would make this happen, and what behavior might avoid it?”

QTEs, Don’t Move, and Settings

Quick Time Events are not just action decoration. Missing one can change injuries, relationships, chase outcomes, or survival branches. Keep your hands centered, sit close enough to read prompts clearly, and reduce distractions during chase scenes. If you are playing with others in the room, make sure one person is responsible for controller input.

Don’t Move and Stay Calm sequences require a different mindset. When the game asks for stillness, stop adjusting your grip. Put your hands or controller in a stable position, breathe slowly, and avoid laughing, pointing, or shifting at the worst moment. On PC or Steam Deck, check how your chosen input device handles the equivalent mechanic before a serious run.

Settings are part of survival. If button prompts, darkness, subtitle size, glints, or QTE timing are getting in the way, adjust them. The game is still about decisions under pressure; clearer prompts simply make sure the pressure is coming from the scene, not from unreadable UI.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not rush dialogue choices - read both options before choosing, even when the timer is short.
  2. Do not ignore small relationship changes - later scenes can depend on how characters feel about each other.
  3. Do not treat totem visions as guaranteed events - use them as warnings about possible danger.
  4. Do not follow old PS4 collectible routes blindly - the remake relocates totems and adds new exploration pieces.
  5. Do not watch QTE scenes passively - prompts can appear while the action is pulling your eyes elsewhere.
  6. Do not move during stillness prompts - settle your controller or input device before the tension peaks.
  7. Do not skip clues in quiet rooms - context can make later choices easier to understand.
  8. Do not chase a perfect first playthrough - finish the night, then replay for specific outcomes.
  9. Do not confuse the remake with spin-offs or the movie - Rush of Blood, The Inpatient, and the film are separate products.
