Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood Beginner Tips - Ray, Thomas, Duels, and Concentration

Beginner tips for Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood covering Ray and Thomas, cover, Concentration, duels, money, ammo, secrets, difficulty, and online caveats.

On this page

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood is a mature Western first-person shooter developed by Techland. The original release was published by Ubisoft, while current PC storefronts list Techland Publishing. This is the 2009 prequel about Ray and Thomas McCall, not Call of Juarez: Gunslinger.

Content warning: ESRB rates Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood M for Mature 17+ with Blood, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes, and Violence. This guide keeps descriptions non-graphic and focused on play.

This is a beginner first-clear guide for story combat, Ray versus Thomas choices, Concentration, duels, money, ammo, secrets, and availability caveats. It is not a full walkthrough, all-secrets route, achievement roadmap, multiplayer guide, exact boss guide, or Very Hard route.

Essential Tips

1. Pick the Brother for the Fight You Want

Ray is the safer close-range pick; Thomas is the cleaner range and mobility pick.

Choose Ray when you want durability, dual revolvers, dynamite, and a more direct answer to close fights. Choose Thomas when you want rifle range, bow utility, lasso access, and routes that lean more on precision or movement.

2. Do Not Treat Character Choice as Cosmetic

Some sections change how the brothers handle the same problem.

The story usually keeps the other brother beside you, but your pick affects weapons, tools, survivability, and some split-path moments. If a route feels awkward, think about whether you are trying to play Thomas like Ray or Ray like Thomas.

3. Break Line of Sight When Health Drops

Regenerating health only helps if you stop taking hits.

When the screen is warning you or enemies have the angle, back into cover and let the fight reset. Standing in the open while waiting for health to recover turns the system into a trap.

4. Reload and Reposition Before the Next Push

A quiet second between groups is where you win the next exchange.

After a wave, check your ammo, pick up useful weapons, collect money or supplies, and move to a better angle before following the objective. Bound in Blood often punishes rushing through doorways, corners, and dark routes.

5. Use Concentration Before It Goes to Waste

Concentration is charged by kills and should solve dangerous pressure.

Use Ray’s version when you have multiple targets in view and enough revolver ammo to make the tags matter. Use Thomas’s version when a visible group needs quick, timed shots, and remember that his bow can also support slow-motion precision.

6. Save Cooperative Concentration for Clean Entries

Doorway slow-motion scenes reward preparation.

When the game sets up a brother-to-brother breach, enter with loaded guns and sweep deliberately. Missing easy targets in these scripted bursts can turn a simple entry into a messy room fight.

7. Duel With Discipline, Not Panic

The bell matters.

Keep the opponent centered, keep your hand close to the gun without touching too early, and wait for the draw signal. Once the bell hits, draw and fire cleanly. Do not invent a boss-specific duel script unless you have practiced that exact fight.

8. Keep Money Practical

Money is useful because supplies and better weapons are useful.

Collect cash, weapons, and ammo from enemies as a habit, but do not turn a first clear into a money route. Spend around immediate needs: ammunition, weapon condition, and the next section’s likely range.

9. Open Chests Without Turning This Into a Secrets Route

Secrets and supplies are worth checking for when they are nearby.

Chests can matter, but this starter guide does not provide exact locations. If you see a side room, ladder, barn, or obvious chest route after the fight is safe, check it. Leave full completion cleanup for a dedicated secrets guide.

10. Treat Very Hard as a Later Job

A first clear and an unlockable hard route are different plans.

Learn the brothers, the duel timing, weapon feel, and the story’s encounter rhythm before planning around Very Hard. The harder route is better approached after you know where the game pressures you.

11. Do Not Plan Around Public Online Play Yet

Current storefronts do not support one simple multiplayer promise.

Steam says online features are no longer supported, GOG says LAN-only multiplayer, and Xbox’s current page still lists online multiplayer metadata. Treat multiplayer and online achievements as things to check before planning a session, not as guaranteed guide steps.

Ray or Thomas

ChoiceBest Early UseWatch Out For
RayClose-range pressure, durability, dual revolvers, dynamiteDo not force long-range precision if Thomas would fit better
ThomasRifle range, bow utility, lasso movement, quieter precisionDo not soak damage or brawl like Ray
EitherGeneral shooting, cover, objectives, horseback or vehicle momentsSome split paths and tools change the route feel

Combat Priorities

  1. Cover first: If the room is busy, take a protected angle before chasing kills.
  2. Reload between waves: Empty guns make doorways and corners much more dangerous.
  3. Use the right brother tool: Dynamite, lasso, bow, dual revolvers, and rifles solve different problems.
  4. Spend Concentration on pressure: Use it for groups, dangerous angles, and moments where normal aim is falling behind.
  5. Collect after safety: Money, ammo, weapons, and nearby chests are easier to handle after enemies are down.
  6. Respect duels: Center the opponent, hold the hand near the gun, wait for the bell, then commit.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not rush through a new doorway - Open space, ambushes, and bad reload timing can punish blind movement.

  2. Do not play Thomas like a tank - His range and tools are the point; use them before enemies collapse the distance.

  3. Do not waste Ray’s durability in the open - He can take more punishment, but cover still matters.

  4. Do not sit on full Concentration forever - Use it when pressure is real instead of losing the chance to stabilize a fight.

  5. Do not draw early in duels - Keep your hand ready, but wait for the bell.

  6. Do not ignore enemy drops - Money, ammo, and weapons from defeated enemies keep the next section smoother.

  7. Do not promise yourself a full secrets clear without a route - Nearby chests are fine; a complete route needs a dedicated visual checklist.

  8. Do not assume multiplayer works the same everywhere - Steam, GOG, and Xbox availability/service notes need separate checks.
