Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition here means the STCE release, not the original Guacamelee! or Guacamelee! Gold Edition. It was developed by Drinkbox Studios; Steam lists Drinkbox Studios and Kepler Ghost as publishers, while PlayStation credits Drinkbox Studios as developer and publisher for that release.
This is a spoiler-light beginner guide for combat habits, movement, dimension swapping, Intenso, shops, costumes, and cleanup planning. It is not a full walkthrough, all-orbs route, chest checklist, ability-location route, or achievement plan.
Essential Tips
1. Treat Combat Moves as Movement Tools
A special move is often the answer to both the enemy and the room.
Guacamelee! STCE is built around attacks that also move Juan through space. Rooster Uppercut, Frog Slam, Dashing Derpderp, wall moves, grabs, and other special tools matter in platforming as much as they matter in fights. When a room feels impossible, ask which direction the latest move sends you before assuming you missed a hidden route.
2. Read Both Dimensions Before You Commit
Dimension swapping changes the room, not just the background.
The Living and Dead worlds can have different terrain and enemy states. Before swapping in a dangerous platforming section, look at where Juan will land and what hazards or enemies become active. In STCE, independent dimension swapping can also matter in co-op and Shadow Swap settings, so do not build habits around only one visual state.
3. Use Shops and Save Points as Cleanup Anchors
Do risky detours from a stable restart point.
Passing a shop can trigger autosave, and deaths can require re-collecting pickups gained since the checkpoint. If you are testing a hidden path, challenge room, or new ability gate, start from a nearby shop or save point instead of stacking several pickups before a hard fight.
4. Buy Survival Before Flash
Health and stamina make every room easier to learn.
For a first clear, health and stamina chunks are safer early purchases than niche upgrades. More health gives you time to learn boss and arena patterns; more stamina gives you more room to chain special moves. Intenso upgrades become valuable, but they work best after the basics are stable.
5. Use Intenso in Bursts
Turn power on for the problem, then save the rest.
Intenso is an STCE-specific system that builds through combos and makes Juan stronger while active. Do not activate it just because the meter is ready. Save it for armored groups, boss pressure, challenge-room mistakes, or shield-breaking utility once upgraded, then turn it off before the meter drains for nothing.
6. Practice the Full Control Set Early
Guacamelee asks for diagonals, specials, grabs, dodges, swaps, and map checks.
The move list is larger than a basic brawler’s. Spend time with grab throws, dodge, dimension swap, Pollo Power, map access, and special inputs before the game combines them under pressure. On keyboard, test bindings for ghosting if several keys must be held together; on controller, make sure Intenso inputs are reachable.
7. Use Chicken Form as a Route Reader
Small gaps usually mean a different body, not a harder jump.
Pollo Power lets Juan use chicken form for small spaces, and STCE adds Pollo-Bomba for specific block interactions. When you see tight passages, purple/chicken-themed blockers, or routes that seem too low for Juan, mark them mentally and return when the chicken toolkit catches up.
8. Separate Main Progress From Hidden Cleanup
Metroidvania backtracking is expected.
Do not force every hidden item the first time you see it. STCE changed content and layout from earlier versions, and exact collectible routes need a focused cleanup pass. If a chest, side path, orb, or block asks for a move you do not have, keep moving and return after a new traversal tool.
9. Treat Costumes Like Builds
They change stats, not just appearance.
Costumes can carry mechanical upsides and drawbacks, and silver coins are tied to those unlocks. Read the tradeoff before buying or switching. A costume that helps damage, stamina, health recovery, or throws may also punish a weakness you are not ready to manage.
10. Use Local Co-op Deliberately
More players can help, but they also add screen and dimension decisions.
STCE supports drop-in/drop-out local co-op for up to four players, but there is no online multiplayer. If you play co-op, assign controllers clearly, make sure everyone understands dimension swaps, and avoid spending solo progress money on co-op-specific upgrades unless you are actually using them.
Combat and Movement Habits
| Situation | Safer Habit |
|---|---|
| New enemy group | Dodge first, then learn which move opens the group safely |
| Shielded or gated enemy | Use the move the game has associated with that obstacle instead of basic punching |
| Long air section | Chain movement specials one at a time and watch stamina |
| Knocked-away enemy | Follow with a movement attack only if the landing is safe |
| Boss pressure | Save Intenso for windows where you can actually keep hitting |
| Combo Chicken trial | Focus on the prompts and let the character action sit in peripheral vision |
| Co-op combat | Call swaps and vertical movement so players do not fight the room in different dimensions |
Exploration and Upgrades
Open the map often after gaining a new move. Guacamelee! STCE uses ability gates, small passages, dimension changes, and combat-movement tests, so a blocked route can become valid after one upgrade.
For shop spending, use a conservative order on a first run:
| Upgrade Type | Beginner Priority | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Health | High | Gives more attempts inside combat rooms |
| Stamina | High | Supports longer special-move chains |
| Intenso upgrades | Medium to high | Strong once you are using Intenso intentionally |
| Costumes | Situational | Useful, but each has a tradeoff |
| Co-op upgrades | Only if playing co-op | Low value for a solo run |
For hidden items, resist route perfection. Grab what is on the main path, test obvious new ability gates, and leave exact orb, chest, and medal cleanup for a focused pass.
STCE-Specific Notes
STCE is not just a renamed Gold Edition. It adds areas, powers, challenges, enemies, a boss, dual currency, save-slot changes, four-player local co-op, Intenso, Pollo-Bomba, and layout changes. Old original or Gold Edition routes can be directionally useful, but exact orb, chest, ability, and story route claims need to match STCE.
That matters most when a guide says an ability is in a specific room, a hidden item is behind a specific color block, or a collectible route can be completed before a certain boss. Keep those claims out of your first-clear plan unless they are STCE-specific and match what you see in-game.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not drain Intenso after the dangerous part is over - Turn it off and save meter for the next shielded group or boss window.
- Do not ignore stamina before a platforming chain - Special moves are movement tools, and running dry can ruin the last jump.
- Do not chase every hidden item on first sight - Some routes are meant for later abilities.
- Do not buy a costume without reading its drawback - Stat tradeoffs can make a hard room harder.
- Do not skip shops before risky cleanup - A death can cost pickups collected since the last checkpoint.
- Do not mash dimension swap in hazard rooms - Swap only after checking the platform and enemy state you are entering.
- Do not spend solo money on co-op-only value - Buy co-op upgrades when co-op is part of your run.
- Do not fight keyboard ghosting - Rebind keys if diagonal movement, jump, attack, or special inputs fail together.
- Do not stare only at Juan during Combo Chicken trials - Read the prompts first, then clean up timing.
- Do not force chicken passages as human - Return in chicken form or after the STCE chicken toolkit expands.
