Luigi's Mansion 3 Walkthrough - Controls, Route, and Boss Prep

Plan a Luigi's Mansion 3 route with Poltergust controls, Gooigi puzzles, floor order, boss prep, gems, Boos, and Last Resort cleanup habits.

On this page

Luigi’s Mansion 3, developed by Next Level Games and published by Nintendo, is less about rushing through a haunted hotel and more about reading each room as a puzzle. The best first route is to master the Poltergust G-00, unlock Gooigi, clear floors in elevator-button order, and return for gems and Boos once the hotel gives you the right tools.

This walkthrough covers story progress, exploration habits, and boss prep. It is not a complete gem, Boo, or room-by-room screenshot map.

Before You Start

Learn the Capture Loop

Most normal ghosts follow the same basic rule: reveal or stop them, vacuum against their movement, then Slam when the meter fills. Do not treat the Strobulb as an instant win button. Many ghosts hide, block, grab, carry shields, or need a specific opening before the flash works.

Use Slam aggressively once you have a ghost caught. It deals heavy damage and can knock the captured ghost into nearby ghosts, which makes crowded rooms safer.

Treat Every Room as a Puzzle Box

Each floor hides progress behind suspicious furniture, missing doors, mirrors, propellers, ropes, drains, grates, paintings, and objects that react to air. If the route seems blocked, cycle through the Poltergust tools before assuming you missed a key:

Missing objects, footprints, paintingsDark Light

Unlock Gooigi and Use Him Often

Gooigi is not just a co-op character. In solo play, he is your second body for barred rooms, vents, drains, spike floors, paired switches, and late boss mechanics. Press the Right Stick to summon or swap to him, and remember that the inactive character can keep moving briefly if you set up the angle first.

Gooigi’s weakness is water and fire. If a puzzle route has puddles, faucets, pools, or flames, look for a detour, a switch, or a way for Luigi to handle that part instead.

The shoulder-button options matter because they let your right thumb stay on aiming. If the face-button layout feels awkward, practice using L, R, ZL, and ZR during low-pressure rooms before a boss fight forces faster tool swaps.

Main Route

Use this as a story scaffold. It keeps the hotel order readable without turning the walkthrough into a full room-by-room solution.

PhaseRouteMain Focus
OpeningArrival, B1 Garage, F1 Grand Lobby, F2 MezzanineGet the Poltergust G-00, learn Strobulb, Burst, vacuuming, and Dark Light, then rescue E. Gadd.
First buttonsSteward, F5 RIP SuitesBeat Steward for early elevator access, recover E. Gadd’s briefcase, defeat Chambrea, and unlock Gooigi.
Gooigi tutorial stretchF3 Hotel Shops, F2 MezzanineUse Gooigi through bars and hazards, then handle food, shield, and hiding-place puzzles.
Mid-hotel climbF4 Great Stage, F6 Castle MacFrights, F7 Garden SuitesExpect larger themed puzzles, more boss gimmicks, and more rooms worth revisiting later.
Film and museum routeF8 Paranormal Productions, F9 Unnatural History MuseumWatch for prop-based puzzle logic and boss objects that become weapons.
Return-trip pressureB2 Boilerworks and Polterkitty interruptionsTreat stolen buttons and earlier-floor chases as part of the route, not as optional cleanup.
Late themed floorsF10 Tomb Suites, F11 Twisted Suites, F12 The Spectral CatchSlow down for trap rooms, magician misdirection, sand, water, and floor-specific hazards.
Final climbF13 Fitness Center, F14 The Dance Hall, F15 Master SuitePrepare for bosses that ask for cleaner movement and faster Luigi/Gooigi switching.
FinaleRooftopFinish any wanted gem/Boo cleanup before committing to the final confrontation.

Do not force every collectible into the first pass through a floor. The hotel is designed for revisits, and several systems make more sense once Gooigi, Dark Light, Suction Shot, and E. Gadd’s lab tools are all available.

Boss Prep

Luigi’s Mansion 3 bosses are usually tool checks. If a boss blocks the Strobulb, stop flashing and look for the missing step: remove the guard, make it drop an item, hit it with a room object, use Gooigi, or wait for a recovery animation.

Boss or FloorPrep Habit
StewardKeep distance, avoid luggage, use Burst or wait for the luggage opening, then stun and vacuum.
ChambreaUse Suction Shot on the briefcase, pull, and slam before trying to capture her normally.
KrullerSend Gooigi through the cage, avoid water, remove the defense, then capture with the normal flash/vacuum/Slam loop.
Chef SoulffleUse room objects to knock away the frying pan before committing to suction.
Amadeus WolfgeistDodge the seat and piano patterns, use bombs against the piano, then Suction Shot when the opening appears.
King MacFrights and Dr. Potter stretchWatch the arena gimmick first; shields, armor, plants, and traps usually tell you which tool matters.
UgUse the museum objects against the dinosaur phase before fighting the exposed ghost.
ClemRespect float movement, mines, and water positioning instead of trying to fight like a normal room encounter.
SerpciReduce the sand threat before focusing on the ghost.
Nikki, Lindsey, and GinnyTrack the hats carefully so you vacuum the correct target after the misdirection.
Hellen GravelySplit attention: Luigi survives lasers and Hellen above, while Gooigi works below through drains, grates, and switches.
King BooDodge until the spiked-ball attack creates bombs, launch a bomb at the correct King Boo, then use Luigi and Gooigi together during the damage window.

For any boss not listed in detail, use the same diagnostic order: dodge one full pattern, identify the blocked defense, test the newest floor tool, and only then commit to a long vacuum pull.

Exploration and Cleanup Habits

Search With a Tool Rotation

A good room sweep is not random vacuuming. Start with visible interactables, then run the tool set in order:

  1. Flash lamps, flowers, strobe panels, and suspicious decorations.
  2. Vacuum cloth, coins, shelves, and small props.
  3. Blow fans, handles, propellers, sand, and loose environmental pieces.
  4. Suction Shot flat panels, shields, suitcases, and heavy furniture with plunger targets.
  5. Dark Light empty spaces, mirror clues, missing doors, paintings, and footprint trails.
  6. Send Gooigi through vents, bars, drains, grates, or spike paths.

Spend Money as Support

Money is not only end-screen score. E. Gadd’s lab support can help with recovery, Boo finding, gem finding, and hints. Save exact prices for a dedicated checklist pass, but do not ignore money if you are struggling or planning cleanup.

Separate Story Progress From Full Cleanup

The hotel has floor-by-floor gem and Boo cleanup work, but a first clear should prioritize story progression and elevator buttons. Once the route opens more tools, return for Boos, gems, and achievements with a cleaner checklist mindset.

Before the final stretch after Master Suite, pause and decide whether you care about completion. That is the natural time to sweep earlier floors instead of charging straight into King Boo.

Multiplayer Notes

Story co-op lets one player control Luigi and another control Gooigi, which can make paired switches and split-attention puzzles easier. On Switch Lite, check controller requirements before planning local co-op, because detached Joy-Con controllers may be needed for some multiplayer setups.

ScareScraper is a timed co-op mode, not a story-floor replacement. Coordinate on the mini-map, split up for objectives, and call for help when traps or puzzle rooms stall the team.

ScreamPark is separate party play. Treat Coin Floating, Ghost Hunt, and Cannon Barrage as team minigames rather than story progression.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not flash through every defense - Bosses and stronger ghosts often need a shield, object, or movement pattern removed first.
  2. Do not forget Burst when grabbed - Slinkers and crowded rooms punish players who only vacuum.
  3. Avoid walking Gooigi through water or fire - He can solve many routes Luigi cannot, but those hazards dissolve him.
  4. Do not leave mirror clues unexplored - If a mirror shows an object that is missing in the room, Dark Light is the next check.
  5. Avoid spending the whole first visit on collectibles - Some cleanup is cleaner after new tools, elevator access, and lab support are available.
  6. Do not chase bosses immediately after a failed flash - Watch one attack cycle and identify the intended tool opening.
  7. Avoid entering the finale before cleanup - If you want gems, Boos, and achievements, use the late Master Suite/Rooftop transition as a checkpoint.
  8. Do not play ScareScraper like solo story mode - Timed objectives need split routing and teammate awareness.
