Shovel Knight Beginner Tips - Shovel Drop, Relics, Checkpoints, and Gold

Shovel Knight beginner tips for Shovel Drop, relics, checkpoints, gold recovery, upgrades, secrets, Return to Map, and safer boss habits.

On this page

Shovel Knight by Yacht Club Games is a classic action-adventure platformer about running, jumping, battling foes, digging up treasure, and upgrading your gear. This guide is scoped to the original Shovel Knight campaign, now commonly presented as Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope inside Treasure Trove.

This guide covers first-clear fundamentals. It does not include a full walkthrough, exact relic route, Song Scroll route, boss-by-boss script, Challenge Mode plan, New Game+ route, feat cleanup, or achievement guide.

A note on difficulty: Shovel Knight is simple to read, but it punishes careless jumps, lost gold, broken checkpoints, and repeated attack habits. Treat each room like a small platforming and combat puzzle.

Essential Tips

1. Master the Shovel Drop Early

Your downward strike is both movement and offense.

The Shovel Drop lets you attack downward while airborne. Use it to bounce off enemies and objects, cross dangerous gaps, reach safer positions, and set up treasure routes. Practice lining up the bounce before relying on it in boss rooms.

2. Use Dig Slash for Control

Not every enemy should be jumped on.

The basic Dig Slash is still your safest close-range answer when a target is in front of you, when a boss punishes repeated bounces, or when you need to break blocks and suspicious terrain. Alternate between ground attacks and Shovel Drops instead of forcing one pattern.

3. Protect Your Gold After a Death

Dying costs one quarter of your wealth until you recover it.

When you fall, decide whether the dropped gold is worth the risk. If it is near the path forward, recover it carefully. If it is hanging over spikes or a hard jump, do not lose a second life trying to save a bad pile of money.

4. Do Not Break Checkpoints on a First Clear

Checkpoint treasure is a trap for impatient beginners.

Some checkpoints hold treasure, but breaking one removes that respawn point. Leave checkpoints intact while learning a stage, especially near bosses or late-stage hazards. Save checkpoint-breaking for deliberate challenge runs.

5. Buy Survival Before Fancy Cleanup

Health, magic, and useful tools make every stage easier.

Gold funds the run. Spend it on practical upgrades and tools before chasing optional goals that need exact routes. Meal Tickets increase maximum health, the Magicist can improve your magic capacity, and your gear screen tracks armor and Shovel Blade upgrades.

6. Read Relic Functions in the Sub Screen

A Relic is only useful if you know what problem it solves.

Open the Sub Screen, inspect your Relics, and remember what each one does before a hard room. A projectile, defensive tool, movement tool, or utility item can make a specific obstacle safer than raw Shovel Blade attacks.

7. Return to Town Between Major Progress Beats

Unspent gold does nothing if you lose it in the next level.

After clearing stages or collecting items to turn in, check the village and upgrade options. Turn progress into purchases before the next hard stage makes you carry too much unspent gold.

8. Test Suspicious Walls and Dirt

Secrets are often hidden in places that look like dead ends.

The official manual directly encourages shoveling suspicious walls and large areas of land. When a room has an odd corner, an empty wall, a banner, or a path that seems too clean, test it before leaving.

9. Use Screen Transitions to Reset Trouble

Leaving a screen can remove or reset enemies and hazards.

If a room gets messy, retreat through the nearest safe screen edge when possible. Some threats disappear when you leave, and some return to their starting positions when you come back, giving you a cleaner second attempt.

10. Treat Return to Map as a Bad-Run Reset

It can undo a rough level, but you give up what you earned there.

If you missed the stage Relic, lost too much gold, or made a level worse than it needs to be, Return to Map is an official reset option. Use it deliberately, knowing it wipes the current level’s gains.

11. Use Damage Invincibility to Escape, Not to Greed

A hit gives you a short window to reposition.

When Shovel Knight flashes after taking damage, move to safety instead of trying to squeeze in extra treasure or attacks. That short invincibility is best used to leave spikes, enemies, or bad spacing behind.

12. Save Challenge Goals for Later

Feats, New Game+, and Challenge Mode ask for cleaner play.

Steam and the manual both support extra challenge content, but the first clear should be about learning core movement, keeping checkpoints, recovering gold safely, and buying upgrades. Come back for restrictions once rooms and bosses are familiar.

Combat Tips

  1. Bounce with intent: Start a Shovel Drop only when you know where the bounce will send you.
  2. Mix air and ground attacks: Some boss patterns punish repeated downward attacks, so land, reposition, and use Dig Slash when needed.
  3. Keep Relics ready: If a room is built around awkward spacing, switch to a Relic that handles range, defense, mobility, or utility better.
  4. Back away before re-engaging: A safer platform is often worth more than one rushed hit.
  5. Watch enemy reset behavior: If a room turns chaotic, leaving and re-entering can restore a more readable setup.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not break checkpoints while learning a stage - The extra treasure is rarely worth losing the respawn point on a first clear.

  2. Do not chase dropped gold into repeated deaths - Recover money when it is practical, but protect the next life first.

  3. Do not rely only on Shovel Drop - Bosses and guarded enemies can punish repeated bounces, so mix in Dig Slash and repositioning.

  4. Do not ignore your Relics - The Shovel Blade is dependable, but some rooms are safer with the right tool equipped.

  5. Do not hoard gold through multiple hard stages - Turn progress into health, magic, armor, weapon upgrades, and useful items.

  6. Do not leave suspicious walls unchecked - Many rewards are hidden behind terrain that looks slightly out of place.

  7. Do not forget Return to Map exists - If the level has gone badly enough, resetting can be cleaner than finishing with lost gold and missed tools.

  8. Do not turn your first clear into a challenge run - Feats, New Game+, checkpoint restrictions, and full cleanup are better after the campaign is familiar.
