Spelunky is a Mossmouth platforming roguelite built around randomized, destructible cave levels, limited bombs and ropes, traps, treasure, shops, Damsels, and permanent death. Steam lists Mossmouth as both developer and publisher for the PC release.
Content note: ESRB rates Spelunky T for Teen with Fantasy Violence, Blood, and Mild Suggestive Themes. This guide stays non-graphic and focused on play.
This guide is for Spelunky HD, the remake associated with IGDB id 3029 and Steam app 239350. It is not a Spelunky 2 guide, and it does not cover Classic-only mechanics except as historical context.
Spelunky is beginner-friendly in structure but harsh in practice. Randomized levels mean you cannot memorize a single route, and permanent death means every careless step can end a run. The best early goal is not to win immediately; it is to learn the rules that keep appearing in new combinations.
Essential Tips
1. Walk Into New Screens Before You Run
The caves punish momentum more often than hesitation.
Move slowly when the next drop, ceiling, or side passage is unclear. Look down before falling, pause before leaping across a gap, and let the screen show you arrow traps, spikes, enemies, and exits before you commit. Running is useful, but blind running turns random levels into avoidable deaths.
2. Carry a Throwable When You Can
A rock, skull, pot, arrow, or corpse can answer a trap before your body does.
Thrown objects are early-run problem solvers. Use them to trigger arrow traps, hit bats or snakes, check suspicious drops, and create space when your whip angle is awkward. If a level gives you a safe rock near the entrance, consider bringing it forward until you find a better tool.
3. Treat Bombs and Ropes as Survival Tools
Treasure is optional; escape is not.
Bombs open routes through destructible terrain, while ropes give vertical access and can hit enemies overhead. Spend them when they save health, reach a strong crate or shop item, escape a bad layout, or prevent a dangerous fall. Avoid spending your last bomb or rope just to grab low-value money.
4. Learn the Whip’s Odd Angles
The whip is short, but it is not only a straight-ahead poke.
Practice hitting enemies above and slightly behind you. Many early deaths come from trying to stand directly in front of a bat, spider, or skeleton when a safer angle would have worked. If the whip feels unreliable, slow down and set the enemy’s movement before swinging.
5. Rescue Damsels Only When the Route Is Safe
One heart is powerful, but a bad rescue can cost more than it gives.
Carrying a Damsel to the exit adds one heart, so a clean rescue can stabilize a run. The risk is the route: hazards, enemies, ledges, and panicked movement can turn the rescue into damage. If the Damsel is behind spikes, a shopkeeper, or a resource-heavy wall, decide whether the heart is worth the cost.
6. Respect Shops Before You Touch Anything
A shop mistake can change the whole run.
Shops sell valuable items and services, but stealing, damaging the shop, or setting off explosives near it can make the Shopkeeper aggressive. If you are new, buy what you can afford and leave risky robbery routes for later. A shotgun-wielding Shopkeeper at the exit is not a beginner-friendly lesson.
7. Let Death Teach One Rule at a Time
A lost run still has value if you name the mistake.
When you die, identify the rule you missed: a spike fall, a skeleton pile, a shop boundary, a ghost delay, a careless jump, a spent last rope, or a bad enemy approach. Spelunky repeats rules inside new layouts, so learning one rule cleanly matters more than blaming the seed.
8. Leave When the Ghost Pressure Starts
Most late-level greed is worse than the next floor.
The ghost exists to stop endless looting. If you are still poking around when it appears, stop shopping for minor treasure and route to the exit. Beginners should build the habit of leaving with resources and health instead of trying to squeeze one more gem from a collapsing situation.
9. Learn Each Area’s Main Hazards Before Chasing Secrets
The route gets easier when you know what the room is trying to do.
The Mines, Jungle, Ice Caves, and Temple ask for different movement and risk habits. Learn common enemies, traps, terrain, and safe responses before routing secret areas or achievement goals. A simple clear attempt gives you better practice than a half-understood secret route.
10. Use Daily Challenge as a Serious Run
One chance per day means careless warmups count.
The Daily Challenge gives players the same daily cave and only one attempt that day. Warm up in normal Adventure first if you care about the result, then treat the Daily like a focused run with less experimenting and fewer unnecessary risks.
11. Keep HD, Classic, and Spelunky 2 Advice Separate
Same name, different assumptions.
This guide is for Spelunky HD. Classic and Spelunky 2 have different content and mechanics, so do not assume a sequel trick, Classic behavior, or Spelunky 2 route applies here unless the advice is clearly for Spelunky HD.
12. Protect the Mystery Until You Need Spoilers
A hint is often better than a full route.
Spelunky has secret areas, item chains, shortcuts, and unlocks, but its early fun comes from recognizing systems yourself. If you are stuck, look for a narrow hint about the mechanic or area rather than a complete route through the deepest secrets.
Survival Priorities
| Situation | First Habit | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown drop | Look down, then drop an item first if needed | Prevents spikes, traps, and enemy ambushes from deciding for you |
| Arrow trap ahead | Trigger it with a throwable or alternate route | Saves health and keeps panic low |
| Low bombs | Stop bombing for small treasure | Bombs solve bad terrain and blocked exits |
| Low ropes | Avoid one-way drops and deep shafts | Ropes are your safest vertical recovery |
| Damsel found | Check the whole rescue route first | The heart matters only if the rescue does not cost more |
| Shop found | Put down weapons and explosives before moving inside | Prevents accidental Shopkeeper aggression |
| Ghost appears | Route to the exit immediately | Staying for money usually creates a worse problem |
| New area reached | Slow down for the first few rooms | Later areas add unfamiliar hazards and enemy patterns |
Resource and Shop Habits
- Spend for survival first: A bomb that saves two hearts or opens a safe exit is usually better than a bomb spent for small treasure.
- Prefer ropes before panic jumps: If the landing is unclear, a rope can turn a guess into a controlled descent.
- Check crates with a cost in mind: A crate is tempting, but spending several resources to reach it can leave you weaker if it does not solve your current problem.
- Buy clean upgrades when possible: Shops are safer when you pay, especially while you are still learning enemy and shopkeeper behavior.
- Do not test explosives near shops: Bombs, mattock swings, and stray damage around shop tiles can create a fight you did not mean to start.
- Carry useful items forward: A rock, torch, arrow, or weapon can make the next trap or enemy safer.
- Leave with enough tools for the next floor: The next level may ask for vertical movement, terrain breaking, or a fast escape.
Hidden Mechanics
| Mechanic | What It Means | Beginner Use |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent death | A failed run starts over with stock resources | Play to learn rules, not to preserve a doomed run forever |
| Destructible terrain | Bombs can create new routes | Make safer paths instead of always accepting the generated route |
| Throwable objects | Carried items can trigger traps or hit enemies | Bring a safe object through early rooms |
| Damsel rescue | Bringing a living Damsel to the exit adds one heart | Rescue when the path is safe and the resource cost is sane |
| Shopkeeper aggression | Theft or shop damage can make Shopkeepers attack | Pay early, rob later only after practicing the consequences |
| Ghost pressure | Lingering too long brings a lethal timer enemy | Exit when time pressure starts unless you have a clear plan |
| Daily Challenge | Same daily cave, one chance per day | Warm up before using the daily attempt |
| HD scope | HD adds content and modes beyond Classic | Use HD-specific advice for this guide |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Do not sprint into unseen rooms - Traps, drops, and enemies are easier to solve before your momentum commits you.
-
Do not jump into drops without looking - Spikes and enemies below are common run-enders.
-
Do not ignore loose rocks, arrows, skulls, and pots - Throwables are early safety tools, not background clutter.
-
Do not spend your last bomb for minor money - A blocked exit or bad layout can become fatal without bombs.
-
Do not waste ropes on jumps you can climb safely - Ropes are strongest when they recover from drops or reach otherwise impossible vertical routes.
-
Do not carry a Damsel through live hazards without clearing them - The rescue is only profitable if both of you reach the exit safely.
-
Do not throw bombs or swing tools casually near shops - Accidental shop damage can turn a shopping trip into a shotgun fight.
-
Do not keep looting when the ghost is already forcing movement - Exit first, greed later.
-
Do not assume later areas are just harder Mines - Jungle, Ice Caves, and Temple hazards ask for different movement and resource habits.
-
Do not turn every death into a restart without a lesson - Name the mistake before starting the next run.
