The Curse of Monkey Island Walkthrough - Spoiler-Aware Puzzle Route

A spoiler-aware The Curse of Monkey Island walkthrough for the six-part route, Mega-Monkey mode, ship combat, Blood Island, and the finale.

On this page

The Curse of Monkey Island by LucasArts, published on Steam by LucasArts, Lucasfilm, and Disney, is a point-and-click graphic adventure about Guybrush Threepwood trying to undo Elaine Marley’s curse while dealing with LeChuck, pirate logic, inventory puzzles, and insult swordfighting.

Spoiler note: This is a spoiler-aware walkthrough. It names chapters, broad objectives, and emergency solution checkpoints. Stop at the first hint that gets you moving if you want to preserve more puzzle discovery.

this guide is built around the Steam version’s regular and Mega-Monkey difficulty split. Mega-Monkey has more puzzle steps, so use that mode if you want the fullest route.

Before You Start

Pick the Right Difficulty

Regular mode is the lighter route. Mega-Monkey keeps the same broad story path but adds extra puzzle work, which makes it the better choice for a first clear if you enjoy adventure-game chains and want fewer missing-context moments when reading a full walkthrough.

If a solution mentions an item that is not in your game, check whether it is a Mega-Monkey-only step before assuming you missed a room.

Learn the Verb Coin

Hold the mouse on an object or character to bring up the verb coin, then choose the hand, skull, or parrot-style action. The practical rule is simple: try looking, using/picking up, and talking or mouth actions before leaving a screen. Right click usually performs the obvious interaction.

Inventory objects follow the same logic. Many puzzles are solved by combining two strange items before using the result on a scene object.

Use Dialogue as a Key

Talk until topics loop, especially with the Voodoo Lady, crew candidates, shopkeepers, and anyone blocking a route. In this game, dialogue is often how Guybrush learns the next goal, exposes a weakness, or makes a character accept an item.

Part-by-Part Walkthrough

Part I: The Demise of the Zombie Pirate LeChuck

Start by treating the ship hold as a tutorial for comic item logic. Talk to Wally, use the cannon situation to change the room state, and gather anything that looks like a tool.

If you are stuck escaping, build a longer reach tool from the hook and ramrod, use it from the window, and then use the newly reached items to deal with the cannon restraint. After firing yourself into the treasure room, pick up the bag, take the ring behind it, and use the ring on the porthole.

Part II: The Curse Gets Worse

This is the largest early chapter. Keep four goals separate:

GoalWhat You Are Really Solving
CrewProve yourself to Bill, Haggis, and Van Helgen
ShipMake the Sea Cucumber usable
MapReach Palido Domingo and remove the map from his back
ElaineFind where the statue went and recover it

Start at the swamp and Voodoo Lady to establish the Blood Island goal. Then work through Puerto Pollo, the theatre, the Barbery Coast, Blondebeard’s chicken shop, the beach club, Danjer Cove, and the Sea Cucumber.

For the crew, think in weaknesses. Bill needs proof of real gold. Haggis needs the caber-toss contest changed in Guybrush’s favor. Van Helgen responds to a formal challenge, then a banjo duel that cannot be won by honest playing forever.

For the map, focus on getting into the beach club, crossing the hot sand, and changing Palido Domingo’s back situation. The bottomless mug, dye, and cooking oil chain is the key route.

For the ship and Elaine, patch the rowboat, board the Sea Cucumber, survive the monkey problem, and turn the LeChimp setup against the crew. The map directions matter upstairs at the theatre; after that, grease the cannonball setup and use the stage machinery to recover Elaine.

Part III: Three Sheets to the Wind

Rottingham steals the map, so this chapter becomes a combat loop instead of a normal inventory maze. Fight weaker pirates first, earn money, improve your cannons, and learn insult replies through repetition.

The important pattern is that replies matter more than exact wording. Rottingham’s insults are different, but the correct counters match the idea or rhyme from the replies you learned in earlier swordfights. If you are losing, do more regular pirate fights before challenging him again.

Part IV: The Bartender, The Thieves, His Aunt, and Her Lover

Blood Island is a set of linked late-game chains. Do not try to solve it as one giant puzzle. Track these threads separately:

ThreadProgress Signal
Hotel and GoodsoupYou can pass as connected to the Goodsoup family
Hangover cureYou can make and use the drink that changes your state
LighthouseThe mirror and light source are restored
VolcanoYou can enter the ceremony and change the volcano state
Skull IslandYou can reach the smugglers and win the diamond
ElaineYou can remove the cursed ring and combine the replacement ring with the diamond

The hangover cure route depends on ingredients from Blood Island, including pepper, egg, and dog hair. Once the cure opens the crypt route, use the hotel, portrait, nails, bed, Goodsoup history, and crypt interactions to unlock the ring and the family-proof thread.

For the lighthouse, combine the mirror repair with a living light source. The firefly jar needs water and air holes before it becomes useful.

For the volcano and hand-lotion chain, use the tofu mask to enter the ceremony, then create the volcano change that helps with tar. Once Haggis has what he wants, use the lotion to remove Elaine’s cursed ring.

For the diamond, make a compass for the ferryman, go to Skull Island, survive the descent with the umbrella, and use the death-card advantage during the poker sequence. Combine the diamond with the ring before using the finished ring on Elaine.

Part V: Kiss of the Spider Monkey

After LeChuck leaves, explore the carnival as a small ingredient hunt. You need a way to make Guybrush clear his head.

The solution chain is built around a fake pie, meringue, pepper, dog hair, and a snowcone. Get the prize from Dinghy Dog, set up the pie gag with the anchor and pie materials, use the cannon gag to get meringue, push Dinghy Dog until you get dog hair, then add the ingredients to the snowcone and eat it.

Part VI: Guybrush Kicks Butt Once Again

The final ride loops through scenes, so treat each stop as an item check. Do not focus on LeChuck until you have collected the required setup items.

Pick up the rope at the first stop, the rum keg at the second, and lantern oil at the third. At the icy stop, use the keg with the snow-gorilla arm, oil the rope, attach the rope to the keg, and wait for LeChuck. Use pepper on him when the setup is ready.

Puzzle Habits

Separate Goal Puzzles From Item Puzzles

When the game says “get a crew,” it is really three character puzzles. When it says “break the curse,” it is a ring, diamond, lotion, lighthouse, identity, and travel chain. Write the big goal down, then split it into character or location blockers.

Revisit Old Screens After New Items

The game reuses locations aggressively. A tool from the theatre may matter in a barber shop. A beach item may solve a map problem. A hotel item may matter in a crypt. If an item seems like a joke, keep it in mind for a later scene.

Use the Obvious Action, Then the Weird One

Right click or use the most obvious verb first. If nothing changes, open the coin and try the less obvious action. Many jokes hide useful state changes behind looking, talking, biting, pushing, opening, or using an item in a silly way.

Treat Part III as Training

Ship combat is not only a money gate. It is where you learn the insult replies needed for Rottingham. Losing a fight can still teach you a reply, so do not rush straight to the captain with weak cannons and a thin insult pool.

Keep Mega-Monkey Differences in Mind

Mega-Monkey adds puzzle density. If you are on regular mode, some item references may not apply. If you are on Mega-Monkey, collect odd objects even when they look disposable.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Do not leave dialogue topics untried - Key goals and character weaknesses often come from conversation.
  2. Avoid treating Part II as one puzzle - Crew, ship, map, and Elaine each have separate routes.
  3. Do not challenge Rottingham too early - Learn more insult replies and upgrade cannons first.
  4. Avoid ignoring inventory combinations - Several solutions require making a new object before using it on the scene.
  5. Do not assume every solution is in the current room - Blood Island and Plunder Island both use long cross-location chains.
  6. Avoid skipping the lighthouse thread on Blood Island - Travel and Skull Island progress depend on solving it.
  7. Do not chase LeChuck on the rollercoaster before collecting items - The finale needs rope, rum, oil, and pepper setup first.
