The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is built around directional swordplay, dungeon items, return trips to earlier regions, and a long cleanup layer of upgrades and collectibles. The clean first-playthrough plan is to follow the dungeon route, upgrade only what helps the next leg, and track side content as it opens instead of trying to 100% every region on first contact.
This walkthrough targets the 2011 Wii original. Skyward Sword HD notes are included only for broad controls and quality-of-life differences.
Before You Start
Confirm Your Version
On Wii, Skyward Sword requires a Nunchuk plus Wii Motion Plus or Wii Remote Plus. Treat motion accuracy as part of the game, because sword angles, shield timing, bombs, bow aiming, and Loftwing control all lean on motion input.
In Skyward Sword HD, motion controls and button-only controls are separate options. Motion controls use detached Joy-Con controllers in TV or tabletop mode, while handheld mode and Pro Controller default to Button-Only Controls. If you use HD motion controls, recalibrate the right controller when sword angles drift.
Learn the Combat Rule Early
Do not mash at enemy guards. Skyward Sword often asks you to read the opening first: slash Deku Babas along the mouth opening, change angle when Bokoblins block, flip or spin Skulltulas to expose weak points, and hit multi-headed enemies cleanly enough that heads do not regrow.
That rule also carries into bosses. If a fight feels like it is blocking everything, slow down and ask what item, angle, or timing the dungeon just taught you.
Main Route
Use this as a route scaffold, not a room-by-room puzzle solution.
| Phase | Route | What to Track |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Skyloft and Wing Ceremony -> Faron Woods -> Skyview Temple | Learn motion sword angles, start marking early Goddess Cubes, and get used to using dungeon items before fighting. |
| Eldin | Eldin Volcano -> Earth Temple | Keep bombs and shield durability in mind, and do not ignore early cube and treasure checks around the volcano. |
| Lanayru | Lanayru Desert -> Lanayru Mining Facility -> Isle of Songs | Expect Timeshift-style routing, Beetle progress, and the first stretch where rupees, bugs, and treasures start mattering for upgrades. |
| First flame | Farore’s Silent Realm -> Lake Floria -> Ancient Cistern | Treat the Silent Realm as a route checkpoint, then plan Ancient Cistern around Whip readiness and healing supplies. |
| Second flame | Nayru’s Silent Realm -> Lanayru Sand Sea -> Sandship | Prepare for Bow use, Sandship routing, and Tentalus at the end of the dungeon. |
| Third flame | Din’s Silent Realm -> Volcano Summit -> Fire Sanctuary | Upgrade defense before the late Eldin route, and watch for Mogma Mitts and Fire Sanctuary cleanup. |
| Endgame | Thunderhead -> Song of the Hero -> The Goddess’ Silent Realm -> Sky Keep -> Final Showdown | Save serious collectible cleanup for before the final route, then enter Sky Keep and the final fights with upgraded shield, bottles, and bow. |
Route Mindset
Skyward Sword revisits Faron, Eldin, Lanayru, the sky, and the Sealed Grounds multiple times. A good walkthrough route is not “clear everything now.” It is “clear what this chapter unlocks, note what needs a later item, and return when the route sends you back.”
For a first clear, keep three checklists:
| Checklist | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Story route | Keeps the dungeon order readable and prevents over-clearing too early. |
| Upgrade route | Converts treasures, bugs, rupees, and side rewards into real combat safety. |
| Cleanup route | Separates Goddess Cubes, Gratitude Crystals, Heart Pieces, bottles, and pouch/wallet growth from the main path. |
Upgrade Priorities
1. Keep a Reliable Shield
Upgrade shield durability when the Scrap Shop is available, but understand the material weaknesses. Wooden Shield upgrades still care about fire, and Iron Shield upgrades still care about electricity. The Sacred Shield line is the safer long-term defensive path once available because it resists those elements and is useful against cursed threats.
2. Upgrade Bow and Quiver Once the Route Gives You Bow Play
The Sandship and later bosses make Bow readiness more important. Bow upgrades improve damage and range, and Quiver upgrades add arrow capacity. Do not spend the whole late game with a tiny arrow stock unless you are deliberately routing around it.
3. Upgrade the Beetle and Bug Net for Cleanup
The Beetle becomes more important as puzzle spaces and item pickups get more spread out. Its story upgrade to Hook Beetle and later Scrap Shop upgrades help exploration. The Big Bug Net is not just convenience; it makes bug gathering easier, which feeds potion infusions and minigame cleanup.
4. Expand the Adventure Pouch and Wallets
Pouch space controls how many shields, bottles, medals, and ammo bags you can carry. Beedle sells pouch expansions, and one early Goddess Cube chain leads to another pouch slot. Gratitude Crystal rewards feed wallet growth, so side quests help you afford later upgrades instead of only adding completion percentage.
5. Save Upgrade Materials Until You Know the Need
Treasures and bugs are upgrade fuel. If you sell or ignore them early, you may need to grind later for shields, Beetle, Bow, potions, or ammo bags. When in doubt, keep rare materials and spend rupees first.
Collectible Cleanup
Goddess Cubes
There are 27 Goddess Cubes. Strike a cube with a Skyward Strike to unlock its corresponding Goddess Chest in the sky. Because rewards include pouch upgrades, Heart Pieces, rupees, medals, and other useful items, cubes are route power, not just checklist filler.
Use this cleanup rhythm:
- Hit cubes when the main route puts you beside them.
- Mark cube rewards that need a later item or sky access.
- Revisit the sky after major dungeons instead of waiting until the final dungeon.
- Do a final cube/chest sweep before Sky Keep.
Gratitude Crystals
There are 80 Gratitude Crystals. Start this route only after the Finding Kukiel side quest opens Batreaux’s rewards. Individual crystals appear at night around Skyloft and the Sky, while larger batches come from helping people through side quests.
Do Gratitude Crystals in batches. They improve wallet capacity and award other useful rewards, so clearing them gradually helps fund Beedle purchases and Scrap Shop work.
Heart Pieces and Bottles
Skyward Sword has 24 Heart Pieces and five empty bottles. Heart Pieces raise survivability, while bottles let you carry potions into long dungeon and boss sections. A first-playthrough route should prioritize easy Heart Pieces, Batreaux reward checks, and bottle availability before the late boss chain.
Do not force a perfect all-heart route from memory. Keep exact locations for a dedicated checklist pass, especially because some Heart Pieces come from Goddess Chests, side quests, or minigames.
Boss Prep
| Boss | Route Point | Prep and Fight Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Ghirahim | Skyview Temple, later Fire Sanctuary and Sealed Grounds | Watch his hand and body positioning. He mirrors Link and can block or steal the sword, so vary angles instead of swinging through his guard. |
| Scaldera | Earth Temple | Keep bombs ready. When Scaldera inhales, throw a bomb into its mouth, then keep moving side to side to avoid pressure. |
| Moldarach | Lanayru Mining Facility and Shipyard | Target the pincer eyes, keep shield discipline, and use Gust Bellows when it dives into sand. |
| The Imprisoned | Sealed Grounds fights | Hit toes quickly, use Spin Attack when possible, then drive the head pillar down with an upward slash. |
| Koloktos | Ancient Cistern | Bring Whip readiness. Use the Whip to remove arms and expose the red chest core. |
| Tentalus | Sandship | Cut tentacles with Skyward Strike, then use the Bow on the eye when the opening appears. |
| Bilocyte | Thunderhead | Start on Loftwing with Spiral Charges against Levias targets, then reflect projectiles into Bilocyte’s fins and eye. |
| Demise | Final route | Keep a shield ready, punish after Shield Bash windows, and use lightning in the second stage like a powered Skyward Strike. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not swing through every guard - Directional swordplay is the central combat puzzle.
- Do not mix up Wii and HD controls - Wii requires the Motion Plus/Nunchuk setup; HD adds button-only play.
- Avoid ignoring recalibration in HD motion mode - Recenter when sword angles drift instead of fighting bad input.
- Do not leave every Goddess Chest for the end - Cube rewards can improve pouch space, health, and money earlier.
- Avoid starting Gratitude Crystal hunting too early - Batreaux and the Finding Kukiel route must be opened first.
- Do not spend rare treasures casually - Treasures and bugs are upgrade materials.
- Avoid entering late bosses with weak prep - Upgrade shield, bottles, Bow, Quiver, and pouch space before Sky Keep and the final fights.
